Default Calgary in 10 Years. What are your predictions?

Do we get a final oil boom? Will it be a ghost town? Something in between?

What are your thoughts? What industry will be keeping us going? Will there be any new emerging growth industries? Will the population be higher? lower? stagnant?

Just a fun exercise. GO.

Oil will still be the bread and butter of Calgary, but I can see Logistics and Distribution becoming even bigger in the next 10 years. I hope Calgary can continue to expand that sector and become a major western distribution hub. They already have extensive railroads coming through here. Build more warehouses near the airport. They got a ton of land for it.

- Population has exceeded 1.6M
- Green Line complete
- We experience 1 more oil boom (short term)
- CalgaryNext approved (mostly in current form)
- Calgary is hosting the 2026 Winter Olympics
- Nenshi has left municipal politics for provincial or federal
- Calgary's newest office tower (Oxford Place) is still under construction
- Approval for 8th avenue subway is in front of Council
- Ring Road is complete
- The PC's are running things
- Calgary is mid-way through a long-term diversification plan focusing on making the city a renewable energy hub

Crowchild trail bridge is completed. Flames have a new stadium. Somehow it still takes twenty minutes to get from Airdrie to Calgary

Seriously

Population stays in the 1.2 million area, but we see significant shrinkage in the population age group of 20-30. Its mostly the old people that stay because conswarn it moving is hard.

CalgaryNext is nowhere near approval in 10 years. The Calgary Flames start making rumblings of a move.

To stimulate the economy we build a suicide escalator to the stars where people have the option of riding to the top and then plummeting to the bottom.

The city has to delay major infrastructure projects and repairs as the public well runs dry.

This looks pretty good to Mayor Bunk and his CP political mob.

This 2015 report predicted the population (Calgary Economic Region) will be 1,760,600 in 2022:

http://www.calgaryeconomicdevelopmen.../demographics/

I think I heard someone say on CBC Eye Opener today that Okotoks will be 80-90,000 in 10 years.

Why Alberta still has the fastest-growing population in Canada

Babies, immigrants, and high wages help explain the growth

Economy and growth resemble the mid-90s. Stronger than Winnipeg, not as strong as Toronto or Vancouver.

Energy industry is stagnant, but several other sectors collectively keep the city from decline (transportation, tech, education).

Ambitious young people leave, but for the people who stay the relatively low cost of living is attractive. Remains a good bet for young Canadian families who want to live in a major city while owning their own home.

Construction of arena is underway, but not finished.

Winter Olympics bid fails after tepid support in plebiscite.

Most prominent social ills are drug addiction and the property crime it fuels.

Mass American exodus to Canada is one of the biggest myths of our time.

I think Calgary Megacity will be an item of political debate. Should the city annex airdrome and Okatoks

Large deposits of New element monahanium is discovered exclusively in Calgary that has high energy yields and isn't toxic or radioactive. Construction booms and Calgary becomes a mega city. Edmonton is annexed and is known as the new north east Calgary

Energy section is still going strong, starting a 2nd boom: rebound 2018-2019, boom #1 2020-2023; slump 2023-2024, rebound 2025, boom #2 2026-forever...

Led by a strong demand for LNG and the required infrastructure

The big debate in Calgary will be what to do with the Saddledome now that the 2026 Olympics are over and we don't really need two large-scale arenas.
