Random Man stabs and kills 13 year old Girl in Abbotsford at School
So this is a crazy story. Very sad and scary for parents at the school.

Quote:
School officials in Abbotsford, B.C., say stabbings at a local high school that left one student dead and another in hospital were a "random act of violence."
Superintendent Kevin Godden commended staff for "acting heroically" yesterday to subdue the male suspect, aid the two female victims, call police and put the school in lockdown quickly.
|
Interesting connection to Alberta. On CTV news tonight they mention the man was a "drifter from Alberta".

An absolutely gut wrenching story. It's horrifying that there is actual video as well, I don't know why anyone would watch/share this on social media.
Wouldn't an action like this result in a 1st degree murder charge? He must have planned to do it to some extent?

The story I read was that the man was in a completely manic state and not at all sane.
I know it doesn't make it any less tragic for the victims or their families of course.

I didn't hear that, I guess that would shed a bit of light on the situation.

I was going to link to it, but the same page also has the video of the stabbing and I don't want to contribute to circulating it.

Apparently Global BC still has the video on their website and they also aired it on last nights news broadcast. People are understandably pissed.

Man I have a hard time believing that a person could just go randomly crazy, walk into a school, and start stabbing kids. There's obviously a root cause that triggered the event that caused him to act out on it in a school. Whether he has an irrational hatred of kids, knew murdering a child would make for a more tragic event, was getting back at someone for something, etc something motivated him. It takes a lot of effort to actually go through with killing someone and I feel that being in a bad state of mind isn't a good enough excuse to be able to get off with a lesser charge. I hope he gets the max 25 year term for 2nd degree murder here.

It's Canada, won't be anywhere close to 25.

I'm having a hard time with this story - breaks my heart and never know what to do.
Do I read more about it, learn more about all the potential dangers my kids face every day? Or do I not read up on the details because its to painful to think of what this poor girl went through and the anguish the parents are feeling right now.

There's not really such thing as lesser charges because someone is "in a bad state of mind". Either someone is criminally responsible and charged accordingly or not criminally responsible and then there's no criminal charges.
Also, as seen in the Matthew DeGrood case - planned, specific attacks don't rule out paranoid schizophrenia.

Well in a case like this it isn't really only dangers your kids face. Some random person could kill anyone anywhere.
It's just so random, it makes it even more sad.

Makes you think maybe we should have more accessible mental health facilities. It's like 80$/hr for a psychologist, a lot of people out there with big problems and no one to help them. Pressure builds, psychotic break, tragedy.

"Manic state" he'll go with the insanity plea spend 7 years in a mental health institution and be freed.
Probably should have just been shot by the cops.
