Stupid Sun news. The city should stay out of it. If a doctor has decided it is suitable for a patient, it is no business of the city what medical needs are fulfilled. Goddamit, this isn't hard.

This seems like a bigger problem than the Viagra, and it barely makes the story...

According to the report, 16 claimants had an equivalent of two- to five-year supplies of oxycodone in at least one year. Another 32 claimants had the equivalent of 19 months to about 6 1/2 years worth of fentanyl patches in a 12-month period.

Where ever would we be without Captain Crunch's noble crusade to rid wasteful spending in government throughout this great country of ours!
Slow day at work?
Seriously, shut the hell up. Part of me thought the story was funny so I posted it but you have to make it a one man bitch crusade about me.
Is it wasteful spending absolutely, its stupid and ridiculous.
But is it funny that a city is buying 1.9 million dollars worth of boner pills sure.
Seriously you sound like a whiny 6 year old, you don't like what I say, then please please put me on your ignore list. But get the #### out of my face.

I think the concern is that quite a few people are claiming more than 1 pill per day, which seems excessive and possible is some kind of fraud (i.e. claiming pills and then selling them or giving them to multiple people).

This to me is disturbing and needs to be investigated

First of all you'd think that would trigger some kind of alert, and second of all, how much of that ended up on the street.
There needs to be way better oversight

Again, the issue is the insurer, NOT the city. The city hires the Insurance firm to monitor that stuff as there's no drug/medical/dental experts on staff. You'd think the insurer would've flagged that. I've never seen an insurer that would adjudicate for that much before. It's bizarre

Maybe I wasn't being specific enough in my post, You would think that someone that's getting that large of a prescription of a drug like that would set off alarm bells somewhere, like with the insurer or even when getting a prescription filled for that much Oxy.
Obviously I don't know anything about that side of the business. I didn't say that the city should be tracking drug use.

So how does this happen? Either one doctor is over-prescribing, in which case, bad doctor, or the patient is seeing multiple doctors and has several prescriptions, in which case, bad insurance company or pharmacy. I know if I try to renew my totally normal non-opioid prescription to close to when I had the last one done, they won't let me. Someone is dropping the ball here, but how is it the city? Don't they just pay for the plan?

You are correct. These "insurers" really adjudicate claims and manage the process. The city says "please manage our prescription benefits" and assumes the insurer knows what they're doing. As for pharmacies, I'm not sure how their provincial drug management is, as we have a system in BC that shows me what a patient has filled elsewhere. With regards to Dr, it wouldn't be hard to go to multiple walk ins
