Thumbs down Oilers 7, Flames 4 -- Nadir

That was, quite simply, embarrassing. Hopefully it's the low point of the season.

Positives:
- Troy Brouwer
- Alex Chiasson
- Michael Frolik
- Matt Stajan
- Brodie was OK I guess
- Gaudreau, maybe?
- Special Teams

Negatives (bold especially so):
- Nick Grossmann
- Brian Elliott
- Dennis Wideman
- Sam Bennett
- Sean Monahan
- Glen Gulutzan's coaching style
- Officiating
- Dougie Hamilton
- Mark Giordano

More or Less Invisible
- Kris Versteeg
- Lance Bouma
- Matthew Tkachuk

Positives
Penalty Kill
Faceoffs
Offensive pressure
Wideman

Negatives
Goaltending
Defensive positioning
Goaltending
Defensive pairs
Goaltending
Special shoutout to Nik Grossman

Aside from phantom penalty calls because he's Wideman, I thought he played well. If he keeps that up I'd be content with a Hamilton-Wideman 2nd pair behind a reunited Brodie-Gio. We need that elite top pair. Johnny looked good, created opportunities despite not scoring. Mony looked like he was shaking off some rust. Was hoping for more out of Versteeg and Tkachuk. And Elliott, ugh. 2 absolutely brutal goals but also a few decent saves, so there's hope. Losing to Edmonton is never acceptable.

Really bad roster decisions and line combinations on D by Gulutzan. Really handicapped the team tonight. He needs to change things up next game.
It's the first game of the season(where the Flames usually crap the bed), so I try not to get too worked up about it and make crazy claims after 1 game. Refs were horrendous as well tonight. Handed at least 1 goal for sure to the Oilers. Awful.

Flames will be better on Friday.

0/10 for effort

-4/10 for execution

I didn't expect much, and somehow I left disappointed.

Another season, another opening stinker. Of all the teams in the league the Flames should have been prioritizing a good start and this was simply an embarrassment. Gulutzan's puzzling defense groupings and fondness for Grossmann clearly blew up in his face tonight. Elliott was every bit as bad as Hiller last season. This I'm not so concerned about but long term but I feel he had been fighting the puck since the opening period and Gulutzan should have pulled him after the 4th goal.

At the end of the day it's a really disappointing night for this franchise and one game doesn't mean a season but this habit of handing over points early in the season is going to have to end or more people will be getting fired.

Can't believe the lack of energy in that building tonight. Home opener, 7 goals scored against their bitter rival and it sounded like they were playing the game in a library.

Flames looked like they were still in preseason mode tonight. Hopefully they can get it together for Friday.

Bennett as a negative? I thought he had a pretty good game.

Hamilton and Monahan were invisible. Grossman was awful. These d pairings make zero sense.

Can we ever get a coach that makes sense?

Honestly the Flames were the better team, couple freebies from the refs and the goaltending made the difference.

Terrible first by the Flames.

After that it was a combo of terrible luck, terrible reffing and terrible goaltending that did the Flames in.

Hopefully Elliot is done with his new team jitters and this team will be fine.

The oilers however are just terrible still.

No way they should have won that game.

Johnny was not a positive. In fact the entire top line was too invisible for much of the night - until late in the third. Which makes sense given that neither Johnny nor Monahan played much (or at all in the pre-season).
Grossman wasn't good, but games are often decided by the teams' best players.
And the Oiler's best players produced while the Flames' best player did not.
That's your ball game.

This game was lost because of 3 reasons.

- Horrible Coaching
- Terrible Goaltending
- Atrocious Officiating

Pathetic, no other words. Reffing aside we only had about a 15 minute stretch in that game where we looked like a decent team.

Oilers fans are going to be pretty unbearable for a while, they embarrassed us.
