It's all going to come down to October/November for this team. When they start slow they almost always miss the playoffs and when they start fast they usually always make the playoffs. This team simply isn't at a stage in development where they can overcome being behind the 8-ball.

I believe it's going to be another slow start but a respectable 90-92 point season where they are in the playoff race until the last week of the season.

It was a mistake in the URL in the first post of the thread, it was pointing to the draft version. I updated the link for you.

I'm in line with your thinking for the most part, but I really think Tkachuk is here to stay, and I think he makes a big contribution this year.

As well, you need to pick a side on the injury issue. You seem to have perfectly hedged your bets, stating that it could be a problem if a few injuries arise, and also stating that there's enough depth in the system to absorb some injuries. Which is it?

Well written though. Thanks!

Good write-up Bingo, I definitely expect to see the Flames back in the playoffs this year, but I do agree it would most likely be a wild card spot.

Solid article, For me I will be disappointed in the season if we don't end up in the playoffs. Rebuild is over. Time to make the playoffs the next 6 years.

I think if Tkachuk sputters he still plays 10 games ... the 9 game thing is really getting over worked in the media these days.

Get past 9 and give the team the larger 31 additional games to make a call on how effective he is. The timing is great too ... he could go to the WJC and then not come back if need be, while players in the AHL show they are ready to take his spot.

If he settles in he stays, but I don't buy the 9 game window issue - much smarter to burn a year on players you project way up your roster than saving a year of the entry level deal.

No way! I covered that!

should they happen to the wrong players at the wrong times and for punishing durations
It's who, when and how long as a negative.

Easy to fill in with a deep AHL club when the answers are "support player", "middle of the season" and "a week or two"

but I'm a trader, I always hedge.

Good, thorough article.

With so many of their key players being young, it's hard to make predictions with too much conviction. For me, the two big 'ifs' are Bennett and Tkachuk - the better they play, the higher the team goes.

I think 90 points is a bear minimum for this year, and anything under that would be a failure. I predict 95-98 points and a tight Pacific race.

Al Morganti tossed out Flames winning the division this morning. TSN had them in the final WC spot last night. Seems like some growing Flames "chatter" heading into the season.

I'm a pretty optimistic guy as a rule, and I am more inclined to think that the Flames are among the Division top-three than outside of the playoffs.

My disdain for SJ is pretty well documented, and I think they and Anaheim are poised for a setback this season. Also, the "new coach" angle is being employed for all the wrong reasons by some. Last night Bob MacKenzie rightly observed that historically the insertion of a new coach or a new goalie into a team results in a boost. I think this is a huge part of why SJ did so well last year, and will be a big contributor to the Flames success this year. I won't be at all surprised to see this team contending for the Division.

I have a good feeling for whatever that's worth. The amount of "ifs" on this team is certainly reduced for this season.

No ifs in net ... solid
No ifs on the first line ... the pair have done it twice
No ifs on the top three on the blueline after Hamilton turned things around last season

Bit of an if on Sam Bennett's production this year ... I see him exploding but we will see.
Big if on Tkachuk, totally unproven

Largest if on the coach, both in system's and getting the room to play for him.

Any chance you know where I can listen to Al Morganti's take on the Flames winning the division?

Great article as always. I think another if is the backup goaltender based on the performance I observed. Elliott is rock solid, but can Johnson serve the role successfully as the backup? That is one of my concern.
