Last year it was Giordano as Captain and Russell with an A full time
Wideman and Monahan switched A's during road/away games
Monahan gets it full time
Brouwer gets the 2nd one

I feel this is the natural progression of Monahan's ascendance to the captaincy.

Well you certainly don't want Wideman wearing an "A" and asking an official about a penalty or offside, the response would probably be "#### off Wideman".

Only if he's here long term after Gio's done. Nobody is going to supplant Giordano as captain as long as he's on the team.

I would have bet on Backlund. He's worn it in the past, during various injuries / suspensions for the others and, IMO, it seemed to give him a little extra boost to have that responsibility.
All in all, I don't think it matters who wears extra letters. In a good locker room, the good leaders will be respected regardless of the laundry. Maybe this decision serves to highlight that it really is a "new" team, and that the new members are equally important.

You can have three alternates no?
Flames don't usually do that?
C - Gio
A - Monahan
A - Brouwer
A - Backlund
That would work for me, but it's not really a big deal as far as I'm concerned.

I think it makes sense. Brouwer was brought on board to help bring along some of the young guys, in particular Bennett and Tkachuk (if he stays up). He's going to play a huge roll in helping these guys get to the next level. Brouwer has had a rep league wide for his leadership skills everywhere he's played.
I think it's a no-brainer in selecting him.
