I know the 80's were a while ago, but that opening sequence.... are you sure that wasn't filmed in the 1930's? Even the announcer has that old timey news reel voice. Where it's in black and white, and everything is just a little bit in fast motion.
"Listen ya seee. Let's get in the horseless carriage, and go cut a rug down at the new sporting auditorium. Just me and you toots! Let's go paint the town red."
And those 'young' Canadians. LOL.
I don't remember teenagers looking like they were 45 back then.

Wow. That was pretty awful. Although I do remember watching that live.
But hey, it was 1983!

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.

I think the Oilers still have an announcer that sounds "old-timey"

I was there for the opening, way up there in relatively terrible seats. Still remember the Young Canadian's dancing and the entire mat/carpet thing visibly moving. Just terrible, except for the unintentional comedy factor.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.
I just hope when we get a new arena it'll be called something other than "Sponsor name" arena/place/stadium. I like that no matter who the sponsor is, the dome is the dome.

Some interesting pieces about delays, cost overruns, expanding budgets, etc
Cost overruns and delays....great to see that very little has changed in the construction of large mega projects in the past 30 (although it may be 45 yrs by the time the son of the saddledome is) or so years.

How the Dome got it's name
Quote:
Of 1,270 entries submitted in a contest to name the arena, 735 involved the word Saddle. The winning name in the contest, Olympic Saddledome, was drawn from a hat filled with several similar saddle-themed names. At the time the name received a tepid reception from some, including the chairman of Calgary's Olympic Organizing Committee (OCO), Frank King, who was quoted as saying "It is neither Olympic nor western, and it's not even dome".
