TSN: Flames 1 of 4 teams left on Kris Russell. Smid maybe moved for cap flexibility
per McKenzie on TSN
says there has been some discussion/thought that the Flames might be moving Smid for cap flexibility but they will have to pay a premium to do it.
LeBrun says Russell could be signed by Monday but expected to sign next week. Flames are 1 of 4 teams still in the running but they have many moving parts still (i.e. Gaudreau) so maybe the other teams get in.

Can we just sign Gaudreau first though?!?!
I dunno if I like Russell enough to pay a premium to move skid just to bring him in. I'm happy with are young up and comers and feel like one of Wotherspoon/Kulak deserve that 7th/6th spot.

meh, I kind of just wish they'd pass. I don't know what money/term I'd be happy to have him back at, but it's not much for either.

Move Smid in a trade along with a prospect? Like the Bolland trade this off-season?

I don't get this continued Russell rumour. The Flames have no need for him.

Me too. I don't see the appeal. Unless it's to trade him for a dynamite return again. Dude never has the puck. I wish we had a big tough D to play that 4 spot. Kevin, but tougher.

Have to imagine a team like the Coyotes or Hurricanes would be glad to nab an extra pick for an asset that helps them stay above the salary floor and costs them no actual money. I question why the Flames would not just leave Smid on LTIR however.
Great big "meh" to Russell. I guess he fills a need but I'd rather just take a chance on a guy like Kulak, personally. Besides Brodie it feels like we haven't been able to properly draft and develop defensemen for a long time because the roster is annually packed with borderline veterans like Wideman, Engelland, and Russell.

Depends on price/term for Russell. We need a guy who can skate. Then Wideman can bring a much needed veteran presence to the press box.
Wideman and Engelland can not be on the ice together EVER, even if it's 15 minutes a game as the third pairing.

After signing Reider, the Coyotes only have 900k in cap space.
Most likely candidate to take on Smid is NJ
edit: on 2nd thought might not matter if Smid is on LTIR.

Really makes me apprehensive about how much it may end up costing the Flames to move Smid's contract. I am thinking - based on Kotalik's trade that Feaster made - that the ballpark value would be that of a 2nd round pick, but maybe more expensive now.

A big factor in the price to move Smid is if his contract is insured or not.
If it is insured, then the acquiring team will have to pay a small percentage of his actual salary due which might make it cheaper to trade him.
If it isn't then the price will considerably more.

Considering it's a pre-existing injury that has forced him out I wonder if he qualified for insurance for a neck injury, similar to justin williams only being insurable on one leg.

Why would we trade Smid when we can just put him on LTIR when the season starts and sign Russell after that?

Our owners don't like spending money nearly as much as people on here think they do
