Blackhawks sign Richard Panik (2 years, $2.8mil AAV)
Scott Powers @ByScottPowers
Richard Panik has signed a two-year contract extension with the Blackhawks
Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
Panik signs for $2.8 million per season

At $2.8 million per year, Panik left money on the table but credit to the player for knowing a good fit when he sees one. Smart decision
Blackhawks now have zero cap space for next season (assuming no increase in salary cap) and they also have bonus overages coming.
They are likely going to have tweak their roster to get cap compliant next season.

A lot of Panarin proposals over at HF he seems to be the guy some fans are thinking could be moved.

I would be all over Panarin if I was Treliving.

They've still got 4 years of Hossa's cap hit, what happens if he retires right now? They still have to pay it or is there an even harsher penalty?

4.275M against cap for 4 years.
It's the same amount for the remaining years whenever he retires (i.e 4.275 for 3 years if he retired after next season).
Ouch. Pretty sure there's no way to trade it, either. Not sure how much incentive Hossa will have to show up much longer for $1M real money. Perhaps a handshake deal to be a well paid team ambassador for a while if he delays retiring.

If he retires right now, they will incur a recapture penalty of $4.275 million/year that will count against the cap for the next 4 years.
Technically that would save $1 million/year until you factor in the cap hit of the replacement player. Given that the replacement player will likely not be as productive as Hossa next year, Blackhawks are likely better off keeping Hossa.

No doubt when Hossa wants to retire, he will discover some career-ending injury and ride out his contract on LTIR. That being said, he's still worth his contract and still playing well, so that won't be anytime soon. He could be a Selanne or a Jagr...
I would not be surprised if he just plays out the whole contract and is effective the whole time.

Ya no doubt he is a sold contributor. I was looking at it more like if you got a guy like Panarin or another young guy you want to sign, but your money is tied up with Hossa. Yea sure, Hossa is contributing, but would you rather have the 38 year old putting up 42 points or the 23-25 year old putting up 42 points under a 4 year contract?
I'm sure Chicago will sort it all out, they always manage to remain a top competitor despite every year facing a 'cap crisis'.

Side note, does this set the table for Bennett? 2.8 mill for 0.54 PPG.. puts Bennett closer to 2?

The NHLPA shouldn't care. The players get a fixed amount every season. How it's split up between the individual players doesn't really matter.

It sets a precedent in arbitration hearings.

Panik makes just 600K more than Lance Bouma. Just sayin'.

Put me in the camp that says Panik just had his career year and won't get those numbers ever again.
He'll start on one of the top 2 lines again. Fail to produce much. Get replaced by one of the Hawks up-and-coming kids (Schmalz, Kero, Hayden, Jurco, Hinostroza, Motte, DeBrincat, Knott, Noel) and play 3rd and 4th line minutes. He doesn't kill penalties/block shots like Bouma does so he just fades away. KHL by 2020.
Therefore I think the Hawks overpaid.

That only matters if the NHLPA cares more about players with arbitration rights than other players. I haven't seen anything to indicated this stance.

I hope the league is double checking his bank deposits to make sure he isnt earning a little extra on the side...

Sorry I missed the 'NHLPA' aspect of that. I'm more referring to the players around the league who are looking to make more money. When someone takes a discount they set the market value, lowering your earning potential.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of players taking 'discounts' to play where they want to. I'm just under the impression that taking too much of one is frowned upon.
And personally I'm really jealous of the way that organization continues to find gems while remaining at the top of the league.
