I dont actually see anything noteworthy.

For an activist she was pretty non-committal.

"Oil is the Devil, but I'm 'with you.'"

What does that even mean? Why are we listening to this person?

Of all the celebs running the appeal to authority game on the oilsands, Jane Fonda is one of the least noxious. She actually has a long history of activism. I know this because I had to google to find out who she is (and I'm 40 years old).

She speaks out for causes she believes in, fair enough.

But what is her message here? The Oilsands are bad? Okay...why? Oil is bad? Why?

Sorry, but I'm missing it. What is her message?

That's prolly one of the reasons I find her minimally noxious.

I was wondering how she got up to fort mac. combination of walking and horse drawn cart - or chartered aircraft? her modes of transport seem somewhat ironic given her protest.

according to that article, she believes that the fires in fort mac were part of global warming - not sure what to think about that as I thought the general belief was that the fire was started by man. I suppose you could argue that the forest was dry due to the lack of rain and what not - which may have been part of global warming.

Meh. Another paid celebrity activist sent to demonize non-US oil. Big deal.

She didn't have one. She was touring the area and you will probably hear her report in her next speaking engagement.

Is it possible to support oil sands and still believe that in the long run we are hurting this earth with our oil consumption? We really do need to find better ways. I'm pretty tired of the extremism of both sides. All these oilstrong people are just as bad as Leo and his concern about chinooks.

Well I'll give her credit for going when it's this freakin cold. Then again this is when it looks it's worst. Because the steam clouds are insane and the flares glow through them making it look like you're in hell.

Did she stop at Bakersfield on her way up here, or North Dakota, she could have made a nice tour protesting before she got to the area with the strictest environmental and reporting regulations.

I would challenge you to find a single post in any thread by a "oil strong" person that advocates never persuing green energy. Unlike the environmental movement/paid protester side pro oil sands see the benefit in continuing oil sands development while also developing green energy. It is pragmatic since:

A. Oil Sands aren't the dirtiest oil produced
B. Oil Sands emmits same CO2 as some ofthe largest power plants in Wyoming.
C. Eliminating Oil Sands will hinder this country by lowering government revenue to reinvest in green tech

What makes people irate is that he we have a person who has limited knowledge making a publicly stop to slag an area that is unfairly targeted. If Jane really cared she would be at the coal mines in Virginia, or even back home in LA yelling at a heavy oil worker sice California is home to the dirtiest oil in the world.

I am happy people here are finally standing up. For years we did yhe Canadian thing and avoided conflict by staying quiet. It allowed the side without fact to control the argument. All people here are asking for is the facts to be heard, not to stop green tech. Leave it in the ground is nonsense, and only hurts all Canadians...but benefits lots of people who aren't. That is the issue.

Did she stop in her back yard on the way up to protest California's Tar Sands, or is it only ours that need to be stopped?

Yep. Fort Mac is relatively isolated up north yet in the US they are fracking everywhere and there's plenty of environmental impact such as earthquakes, water contamination, etc. If things were reversed and the oil sand were in Texas and the majority of fracking in Alberta celebrities like DiCaprio and Fonda would be crusading against fracking.

At least Dicaprio contributed to some people being employed by filming a movie up here.

I would not be opposed to Canada being a little more restrictive on allowing visitors, based on their intent. I think the right to protest is important, but protest tourism is a little much. Especially considering the complete lack of awareness required to ignore what is happening environmentally in the US, fly to Canada, and protest here.

Wait, why are people even protesting at all?

What happened to our Social License (TM)? What about our Climate Leadership (TM) I keep seeing in government ads every 10 minutes? Didn't anybody tell them about these things?! We have a license dammit!

I would have assumed anyone in the 30-40 range would have at least heard the Mickey Avalon song.
