Flames players getting used to new head coach
http://calgaryherald.com/sports/hock...new-head-coach
Quote:
After conducting nine ice times in the past three days, Glen Gulutzan’s voice was nearly torched.
Still, despite the new Calgary Flames head coach’s waning vocal chords, he wasn’t afraid to stop a drill — just as Dennis Wideman accepted a pass or newcomer Troy Brouwer shot the puck at goaltender Mason McDonald — and explain why the players needed to do it over.
This is just training camp. So far, there have only been practices.
But the new 2016-17 season is just around the corner. And there are sure to be new subtleties and idiosyncrasies that come along with a new coach. Especially in games.
For example, how will Gulutzan manage his bench?
Will he pace?
Signal for line changes?
Chat with players during commercial breaks?
“It’ll be different,” acknowledged veteran Matt Stajan. “Where he stands on the bench. (Former head coach) Bob (Hartley) liked to stand in front of the assistant coaches on the forward side. Or will he be in the middle? It’s all different.
“Those are little adjustments. The practices have been high-paced. We didn’t go to the board a lot. We ran five or six drills without stopping, so that’s a little different.”
|
Quote:
So far, from what netminder Brian Elliott has noticed, there is a certain level of organization to their skates so far.
“It’s been really prepared when we go out there,” he said. “You know the drills you’ll do during the day. They give you a chance to study them before so there’s no mistakes and not a lot of stops and starts. You know exactly what they want to see.
“It’s a preparedness that he wants us to have and the coaching staff definitely has.”
|
Quote:
But an open dialogue, especially in the early stages of the Flames’ training camp, is crucial.
“He’s a laid back guy but at the same time, he expects the most out of you,” Stajan said. “There’s no doubt in my mind that if you need a kick in the ass, he’ll give it to you. If you need some confidence or a pat on the back, he’ll do that, too. What I’ve gotten from him is that he knows what each guy needs at certain times.
“That’s only going to get better and better as it goes.”

Flames Notebook: Rare Elliott pre-season appearance, Brouwer gets schooled on the BOA

In other words: if you’re excited to see what the new Calgary Flames netminder brings to the table, you might have to wait until the regular season.
“We’ll see how the pre-season goes,” said Elliott, as the Flames wrapped up their first few days of training camp ice-times at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
“But I definitely want to get a couple pre-season games in at the end and I think this first one.”
|
Quote:
“I used to be itching to get going,” he said. “But you let the process take its place. It’s there for a reason. You have to keep calm about things.”
Still, Elliott knows he needs to build a connection with his 2016-17 teammates — and that was his main focus this past weekend.
“You want to get comfortable before you jump into games,” he said. “That’s what pre-season is a little bit. It’s just a feeling-out process. You can’t put too much pressure on it, you can’t put too much focus on results.
“It’s really how the game comes together and how you come together as a team. For me, it’s talking to your d-men and really working things out.”
|
Quote:
As a Chicago Blackhawk, Troy Brouwer quickly learned that he was supposed to hate the Vancouver Canucks.
Then, when he was traded to the Washington Capitals, their worst enemies? The Pittsburgh Penguins.
With the St. Louis Blues, one of their biggest duels was against the Blackhawks — so he’d come full circle. Hated them too.
Now, with the Calgary Flames, he’s been well-educated already on the Battle of Alberta.
Add another rivalry to Brouwer’s list.
“It’s right down the street,” said the right-winger as the Flames continued their training camp this weekend, preparing to play Monday’s split-squad game.
“They’ve got a great lineup and have gotten better in the past couple of seasons and are only getting better.
“It adds a little extra element to those games especially when you get to play them five or six times a year.”
|
Quote:
And while it won’t be a full-blown, mid-season Battle of Alberta throwdown, it’ll be Brouwer’s first taste of what’s to come in his first campaign as a Flame.
“I’ve been on four teams now and it’s always fun, the rivalries you inherit,” he said. “The rivalries that are made. Just the passion … I think the fans excitement for that rivalry is really what fuels the players’ rivalry.”

Meet the Flames: Brian Elliott

Quote:
1. What was your favourite Olympic performance of the summer?
“You gotta love (Usain) Bolt. You gotta love the 100-metre (sprint). I love watching the beach volleyball, too. It’s only two people to a team and it’s just a battle out there. Mentally, you can see them grind between point and point. It’s just fun to watch.”
|
Quote:
3. What was your summer highlight?
“Probably when I was on my trip to Croatia and when I got the news I was coming here (to Calgary). It was fun, it’s such a beautiful country. The coast and everything. There are castles on the water and all the history that’s there.”

Gelinas feeling comfortable with new regime
https://www.nhl.com/flames/news/geli...me/c-282135208
Quote:
Like everyone else with an area code on planet earth, Martin Gelinas has watched the Survivor reality TV series.
And yes, actually, he can draw personal parallels to one of those fortunate contestants not voted off the island.
"I like Bob," the immensely popular OT goal-scoring hero of the wildly improbable 2004 run is saying of the deposed Bob Hartley. "We're friends. In this game, there are a lot of good people.
"Bob is one of those good people.
"I really enjoyed working with him. I learned a lot.
"I talked to him only three days ago. He's back home, at the cabin, just staying put.
"He did a great job here, I thought. He really got everything out of our players.
"Management just felt the players needed a different voice, a different message. That happens in this business.
"It's never easy, it's never fun, but it happens.
"I'm just grateful to be here; to still be part of it. I love Calgary. This is our home."

Quote:
But when Glen Gulutzan was lured away from his assistant's post in Vancouver to begin a second stint as an NHL head knock, Gelinas, Sigalet and Pringle were all retained on a staff that added former Ottawa boss Dave Cameron and Paul Jerrard, one of Gulutzan's assistants during his tenure in the Lone Star State, first with the AHL Texas Stars and then up in Big D.
So a new direction begins with a very familiar face in place.
"It's been a really good camp so far but different, for sure," acknowledged Gelinas.
"Bob and Glen are different coaches, different people, with different philosophies. For me, as a young coach, it's a great chance to see and learn from someone new.
"Gully believes in making people better. In empowering people. In showing them the positives. He'll correct players, there's no question of him not doing that, but his philosophy is that these guys are here for a reason. Because they're good players. Because they have a skill set.
"Sometimes as coaches, we get a little negative. Instead of pounding away at what they aren't doing well, let's find what they do well and keep pushing that, the positives while working on the negatives."
|
Quote:
Still, Gelinas likes the direction it's going.
"To me," he admits, "this is all new. But right now, already, Gully is busy planning. Finding clips. Working on team building. Making preparations for what's ahead.
"We're going to run into some bumps in the road, some tough patches. You can't avoid them; it's a long season.
"But if you're well prepared, you're better able to deal with them.
"Like I said, it's different, for sure, but the goal is the same now, with Gully, as it was when Bob was here: To try and make the Calgary Flames the best team possible.
"That doesn't change.
