Default Could you be banned from travel to the U.S. if you have ever smoked weed?

Interesting little tidbit from our neighbors to the south. Enforcing their own 'laws' to keep weed smokers out seems a little sketchy.

I kept this out of the 'legalize it' thread as it is worthy of its own discussion for an entirely different reason.

Lie, lie and lie. And do try not to smell like a BC tree planter while crossing the border.

What if I say I've only smoked fake weed (which is legal)?

Its been like this forever. Until their federal government changes their drug schedules, it will be treated like a criminal act. Admission of use is the same in their eyes as possession.

Yes you actually can.

I actually know a guy who got asked just simply have you ever smoked weed, now he is banned from entering the US.

I have been to the more times than I can count.

I have never been asked that question.

You probably don't roll into the border with a weed leaf ballcap and issue of high times rolled up under your arm.

One time, a Homeland Security agent questioned me ostensibly about what I thought "traveling for pleasure" meant. Quite a clumsy attempt to get me to admit that I wanted to buy drugs or ... I don't know... sleep with someone.

They are stranger people down there, for sure.

"Well, pleasure for me normally means fun."
"Yeah, but we all like to have fun, why do you come down here for pleasure. Any specific kind of pleasure?"
"Uhhh, do you have a supervisor that I can speak with?"

The individual customs officer has a lot of power when you cross the border, if something makes them suspicious or shows probable cause for something illegal they can do whatever they want in terms of restricting your access to the US.

I have seen people banned when going down for a few days work in the US and not having the proper documentation. For instance if you go down for a work conference it can be an issue if you do not have a work permit like an LN or TN Visa.

You don't have to be a pot smoker to be banned, make sure you have your act together when you approach customs and immigration.

Their rigidity is pretty useless though because you can easily be coached into how to fool them. Simple, one-word answers. Smiles. Also, being white doesn't hurt.

This is true for Canada as well, I brought a guy up for work, and my Talent Acquisition Consultant in HR told me the same thing.

The Border Office can stop them entering Canada for the simplest reason.

They seem to soften a little when I mention how excited I am to finally see Mount Rushmore. I've never been to Mount Rushmore, I have no desire to see Mount Rushmore, but I've made a lot of plans to see it!

Haha, that is going on the list. Maybe I should stop talking about how excited I am to go look at the 9/11 memorial?

Never been asked the weed question (and, again, you're dumb or just asking for it when you've got the High Times on the seat beside you as you try to cross into the US) but I went through a 3 year period where every US visit I got the "when's the last time you were arrested?" question every single time.

Had to go wait in the little room where they try to make you nervous. Had one customs officer flat out tell me I was lying. They were never able to detain me, just delay me enough to annoy me or worry my travel companions.
