Default [News] Kris Versteeg back on FA market

Didn't see this anywhere else, so here you go. Perhaps another potential RW depth signing, or fodder to be overpayed by clubs such as Edmonton?

Quote:
TSN’s Darren Dreger reported Monday that Versteeg, 30, is back on the free agent market due to insurance complications that have prevented him from being able to remain a member of Swiss team SC Bern. Though details have not been released, Dreger speculated that a previous hip surgery may have been the reason why Versteeg was not given full coverage.
Quote:
Kris Versteeg is still a capable NHL scorer, having potted 15 goals and 38 points in 77 games during the 2015-16 campaign.

Brad should absolutely dangle a 1x1 show me deal to him. It definitely wouldn't hurt to have a 40 point veteran on a one year deal.

He'll probably get more though on the open market I think.

Considering how much he's burned the Flames over the years, I'd rather be on the other side of that once and awhile. However there is a poster somewhere (whether it's here or on HF) who knows him and his family personally and has never had a good thing to say about them.

That thinking unfortunately failed us with Mason Raymond.

Problem with Raymond was the term, not that it was tried. Seen enough line up suggestions on these forums the past week that have Shinkurek (spell, not looking it up) sliding into our first line.

If you can fit it in the cap without hurting us, and you don't have to commit on term, taking a flyer on a guy like Versteeg would be smart. Best case scenario, Shinkaruilaluk actually does outplay him for a spot, worst case neither player work out.

Burke had Versteeg in Toronto and moved him pretty quickly, I doubt the Flames will have any interest in Versteeg and his $150,000 car.

Not sure why there's a problem with him having a nice car?

Even if he signed with a Swiss team, wouldn't he have likely had an NHL clause if he was offered a contract before December 1st? Or does the Swiss league not do that?

What's with this guy? Why can't he keep a spot in a lineup.

He's not slow, has some mad puck skills and sees the ice really well. Not sure about his defensive prowess but I've never seen him as a real liability.

After the Talon incident with the RFA's in Chi-town, I understand them moving him.. But after that? Sure he wasn't the same offensive threat in TO, but that whole roster was bad and subsequently the coach was fired, and of course players moved. But Florida didn't have tons of depth and Versteeg couldn't stick..

Why can't he keep a job in the NHL?

Seriously though, doesn't he have a reputation for being a bit of a dirt bag?

I was mocking his arrogance and need to tell everyone how expensive his car is.

The 24-year-old said the culprit had written into the dust covering the car, but added that it had also been spat upon.

“Oh, they were writing stuff all over my $150,000 car,” he said on Monday.

Was he planning to involve the police?

“We probably will, yeah,” he said.

Versteeg also spoke out and more or less insulted fans about the waffle toss thing that happened in Toronto. The guy seems like a first class ###### bag

not to mention he is not great defensively, maybe even a liability, oft injured and doesn't use his size effectively.

Why is it that every time some guy goes UFA or is dumped by other teams... that nooobody wants!!! ..... Why do people think the Flames should take a flyer on him!!!

The Flames don't need this #@*t anymore! We have lots of guys that deserve a shot without bringing in more Raymonds, Bolligs, Hathaways, etc etc... We need to unload trash not bring more in!!

There.... I feel better already

He wasn't having the same impact on our team ... Not for lack of trying on his part or lack of effort. It hadn't been the fit we envisioned and he has tremendous value as demonstrated today. I'm not disappointed in Kris; he's a good guy and a good hockey player
I'd be highly in favor of bringing him on if the price was right. He'd be a nice bit of depth at (Probably) a decent price.

No GM says bad things about players to the public, that is about as little praise as a player ever gets unless there is a major incident

I don't necessarily think the Flames should take a flyer on Versteeg.

But I would much rather have Versteeg on a PTO than Higgins. Apparently Versteeg isn't that bad defensively either.

Flames should consider Versteeg because he's a right handed RW. Who else is in the depth chart:

-- Brouwer (30-40pts)
-- Chiasson (20 - 30pts)
-- Frolik, also a LW (30-40pts)
-- Vey (20pts)

Versteeg is historically good for 30+ points, so immediately he would be competition for any other RW in the system. Since there isn't a lot of depth here in the likely event of some injuries, what's the harm in at least a PTO or a cheap 1 year contract that can be buried in the minors?

Here's a line with him in it:

Gaudreau - Monahan - Versteeg
Shinkaruk - Bennett - Brouwer
Frolik - Backlund - Chiasson
Bouma/Ferland - Stajan - Bollig/Vey
