just wondering if anyone has suggestions for an economics class to take. Some background: this is my final semester, so I need something that's not necessarily easy, but will hold my interest, either through course content or good instructor. I've looked through other subject areas, but nothing fits in, or I don't have the pre-reqs, etc. To save you time, here's the list of courses and the instructor that fits into my schedule:

Currently, I'm registered in Econ 341 (Money and Banking) with Janko

ECON 321 (The Global Trading System) with Beaulieu
ECON 355 (Canadian Public Finance) with Wen

I've heard nothing of these profs, although hear that Money & Banking is up my alley...just seeing if the other two courses might be a more interesting option.

Thanks

I took Econ 341 in the last year of my B.Comm.

It was a pretty cool class (assuming you like Economics and business Math type stuff). I did well (A-) without killing myself. I'd actually say it was probably one of the best options I took considering part of my daily job now is as the Treasury and Cash Manager for a fairly big company here in town.

Geology, Psych, and Formal Logic type options that I took were cool and all, but I don't exactly get to apply what I learned in those very much (if ever).

calf, econ 341 was by far one of th ebest econ's I took.
should be a breeze and is pretty intresting, IMO.
Not sure about ANY of those profs tho. So can't help you with that. If you enjoy statistics, perhaps ECON 395(i think, formely ECON 315) and another could possibly be ECON 323.
But those two clases you have listed there don't seem too bad. It's also too bad you can't take 321 with Tracey, that would probably make it a tad easier.

EDIT: Access to Infonet.

I'm in 321 in Winter Semester, I hear good things. 341 is supposed to be absolutely golden.

I got my Econ degree in 2002. One of the best Econ professors out there is JF Wen. If I were you, I would definately take Econ 355 hands down. I took Econ 341 and it was good too, but trust me. Wen is a fantastic professer and he keeps you interested in the course as well.

If you end up taking Econ 355, you can thank me later with a beer or two. You won't regret it.

They are all pretty good.

Public Finance was pretty interesting, the transfer payments and provincial vs. federal finance stuff is cool to learn about. I don't know about Wen though.

Money and banking was a little bit too basic for me, but still good.

Global trade was interesting too.

Maybe stick with money and banking.

So, all you economist's, why should someone become an economist?
(asked in all seriousness) and why shouldn't we go into Comm?

In hindsight I would probably have done the BComm instead, focusing in PLM or Finance.

I like the group work in and enjoy getting to know the people, there isn't really much opportunity for this in econ.

I also like the fact that lectures tend to be more of a discussion in business, rather than an expert talking down to you while you listen with econ.

Haskayne business school looks out for their students better, as far as helping to set them up with carreer opportunities etc. Granted it is a bigger school, but I still don't think that the economics department at UofC has done enough to promote their grads as good candidates or linked up the students with carreer opportunities.

It's almost as though the teaching is just kind of an afterthought for some of the professors, research being their main focus. There are some exceptional professors though, I don't want to discount all of them.

Business students get some flak for wearing suits to school but compared to some of the degenerates in other faculties they aren't too bad.

Econ does have some interesting energy/oil and gas related classes that I quite enjoyed.
