Just out of curiosity, how much did they actually get?

I mean, if you rob a bank how much money are you actually looking at getting?

I guess bank robbery ain't the sexy crime it used to be. Do banks even have that much cash in them anymore? Haven't seen a vault since I was a kid.

I knew a guy that spent 2 years in the clink for armed robbery. Him and his pals held up a gas station in the 70s when the store opened, total take was less than $5.

This is why I stick to mugging the elderly at ATMs.

Not much anymore. Unless you are part of a big heist and plan on cracking the vault after hours sort of thing.

The "run in and grab money from a teller" robbery...well, you'd likely get about as much/more money and, if caught, do less time if you went to a convenience store, let's say.

Well yah, I'd mug kids too, but they are all "tap'n'pay" now, anyone under 35 doesn't use cash.

Most bank robberies nowadays are the "note pushers". Someone comes to the till and passes a note saying they are robbing the bank and to give them as much money as one swipe of a card will give them (money at most banks now is done from a central cash machine, rather than a cash drawer for each teller). The amount is usually between $1000 and $2000, so not a huge amount, but not chump change either.

Biggest disappointment from working in a bank was the lack of money that was actually in the vault. You'd open this massive vault door, and then open a double locked part of the vault, only to see like 3 or 4 small piles of $20s and $100s.

I think it depends on approach, you aren't going to get very much by sticking up a teller. You have to do it GTA V style and get into the vault and open the safety deposit boxes.

And then you're always going to have that one arsehole, who you hired for the job that you weren't quite sure about but he came cheap, that falls off his goddamn motorcycle and you have to risk your neck to pick up his duffle bag or lose a third of your take.

That sounds a lot like stories my Brazilian friend tells me. He says that gangs will kidnap a tourist, take their money and then force them to take out their daily limit at an ATM (like $500) and then keep them overnight so they can take it out again in the morning and then let them go.

It seems brilliant because the dollars are so low and the police seem fairly indifferent.

Those Brazilians!

Since being on Dr Phil in 2007, my niece was always the hit at family reunions. Then my cousin robbed a bank in Vernon. She got two years and kept all the newspaper clippings of the events in a scrapbook she passes around. Now my niece glares at her and thinks her kids should not be allowed to play lawn darts while we bar b que Costco burgers. It's not always about the money.
