Ok so I'm watching Deadwood and this tune starts playing. I'm 99.9% sure it isn't original music because it sounds super familiar but I can't for the life of me identify it. I've literally spent the last hour repeating the same clip while scouring the Internet to no avail.
I finally broke down and recorded it myself on my tv (sorry for the poor quality). Also, please don't sue me HBO.
There's a couple of websites that specifically are all about music from TV shows - but nothing for this episode.
I can understand your frustration - feels like with the Internet you should be able to find any piece of information - so when you can't it's a real piss off.
Haha, after ottomattic posted the answer I wanted to say "geez, Cecil how did you not hear that?", but I hate when stuff like this gets me, such a horrible feeling when your ears know they hear something but you can't put your finger on it.
In this case it was the slightly odd picking pattern on the banjo that did enough to take away the easy identification of the song.

Honestly I have house of the rising Sun by the animals on my iPhone and I listened to it when I was trying to find songs that I thought was this one and because of the way that the song is played in deadwood I didn't think it was the same and I think it's because they slowed it down or something. Now I'm even more pissed off that I couldn't recognize it.

Yeah, it seemed like the last two banjo string picks in each chord were either muted or played a little late (on purpose obviously) and it totally throws your brain away from that song until you know that's what it is.
