Default Flying ants

Anybody else noticing a ton of flying ants in their gardens?

Went out into the back garden today (don't think I'd been out there since last weekend) and there are thousands of them all over the grass. None in the front, but the grass grows better out the back and hasn't been cut in a couple of weeks.

I found this reddit thread from a few years ago and according to one guy, it appears it might be a mating ritual known as Flying Ant Day and that they'll all be gone in 24 hours. I'm hoping this is the case, but just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this right now.

Yep we've experienced this too - my wife was doing some work in the backyard garden and all of a sudden around 3pm:

http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthr...=90041&page=26

All of a sudden this afternoon, thousands of flying ants have swarmed our home garden.

I read they will not harm the plants etc; but extremely annoying that we can't go into the backyard or deck.

Any help someone could suggest to get rid of them faster?

I'm glad that I'm not alone in that. Unfortunately some got in the house because the door was open, which was fun. Nothing like having to get rid of about 40 of them.

Out in the kiddie pool and about 5:30 they swarmed. Over 200 kamikazzed themselves into the pool. They don't like fire though. So they have been avoiding us around the fire table.

They are in my back yard. We have about 50 gazillion birds having an all you can eat buffet out there.

Side question: What bird had the body of what looks to be a starling, but has a blue/black head?

Not in Calgary but they also come around in Vancouver in the summer for about two weeks, usually July but only in specific pockets of the city. Really annoying cuz they seem to come out during very hot days forcing you to close your windows and turn on the AC. At a red light you can see as many as 10-20 on your windshield and windows.

I'm assuming they die off after a short period cuz they disappear and don't come back until the following year.

I hadn't noticed them until this thread. Went outside and noticed a ton of them.

I blame you.

many years ago I rented an apartment near the old childrens hospital on 17th. The apartment was on the ground floor, and completely renovated from top to bottom before I moved in.
Apparently, during the renovation these ants started a colony behind the kitchen wall, laid hundreds/thousands of eggs which hatched a week after I moved in.
Ants crawling out from every crevice in the baseboard, through small gaps in electrical outlets and light switches. Once out they were flying everywhere inside the freakin apartment
The most disgusting experience of my life, and I've been around cadavers, and bodies carted in at the morgue.
Apartment management fumigated the apartment, however, when I returned there were dead ant bodies everywhere all over my stuff. Fortunately, I had barely unpacked just the essentials, and the majority of my stuff was still in storage or in taped boxes
Makes my skin crawl just thinking about it again

I'm guessing a common grackle, or maybe some kind of cowbird.

You're approaching Dion's level of "Google thread title and paste first image that appears" posting Regulator.

Actually, I took the time to locate a decent quality image and find a proper youtube link.

With the large amount of ants we thought it was an alien invasion - I was thinking this was like that new TV show - BrainDead
