Coyotes buy out Vermette's contract
Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Something odd today. ARIZ has put Antoine Vermette on waivers for purpose of buyout.
very strange.

That is odd. Serviceable player on pretty reasonable dollars with only 1 year left?

Maybe this is a budget related move to bring in a big salary via trade or free agency?

Also interesting is that Vermette has a NMC so he can opt not to be put on waivers before a buyout occurs. He obviously choose to be put on waivers.
Must be hoping someone will claim him.

I'm surprised they couldn't find a taker for him and just took a portion of the salary back in a player or retained some salary?

Wat?!
I would take Vermette on my team over plenty of others (Stajan for just an example). I wonder where he lands.

Is he behaving like Mike Ribiero?
Or his Hero chart was really awful this past year.

Without Vermette playing center, this is now their depth chart as far as I understand it.
Hanzal
White
Dauphin
?
They must be assuming that guys like Strome and Dvorak will make the team out of camp and contribute right away. That's a pretty dangerous assumption to make for the center position. I honestly don't understand what they're doing here.

Strome and or Dvorak are ready. Strome has the size and spent another year in junior. I find it tough to believe he is not on the team.

Why though? It is my understanding that if he is bought out he gets his salary. or a good % of it, and then can sign for less with a team of his choice?
With waivers, he is throwing away the NMC.
Or am I overselling his ability?

How often is one move made as a set-up for another imminent move? Is it less than 100% of the time people are convinced a chain of dominoes is about to fall due to a minor move?

Odd move indeed. The main thing i take out of this is, if there wasn't already enough signs that players like Stajan, Wideman, ect. couldnt be moved, then this is the cherry on top.

Ryan MacInnis is also looking very good, I could see him jumping in as a 3C. Strome at 2C. Dvorak on the wing with spot minutes at centre.

It would have to be something huge (on the order of Strome + Smith <=> Malkin + Fleury).... Otherwise, why would they take on Datsyuk's salary only to buy out Vermette a few weeks later?
Weird.

First off he is extremely unlikely to be claimed off waivers. Teams know that it is for a buyout and know they can try to sign him to a lesser contract after the buyout is completed. He is just hoping against hope that a team will claim him so he doesn't lose money.
Vermette just lost $1.25 million dollars because of the buyout. He is also put in a bad negotiating position. Unlike if he was a free agent on July 1st, a lot of potential teams are out of the question, as they have already committed their cap dollars. There is a good chance that he signs for much less than the $1.25 million.

They're not paying Datsyuk anything. All they took on was the cap hit (because it was a 35+ contract, the cap hit still counts even after he retired).
