Sean Avery harassing homeless people for laughs

Twitter users were left sickened by former NHL star Sean Avery who filmed himself harassing homeless people for his Snapchat.

Avery, 36, repeatedly films himself approaching sleeping homeless people in New York and asking them for the time.

He has since responded to the backlash by sarcastically tweeting: 'Next time someone asks me for the time while I'm standing on the street I'm calling the police.'

One video on his Snapchat story shows him waking up a man sleeping on the street by saying: 'Yo brother, you got the time bro?'

Another from Monday afternoon - complete with a special Independence Day filter - shows him approach a couple of men and ask them for the time as well.

Hounding the homeless on video for his social media followers appears to be a running joke for the 36-year-old.

Cody Wines wrote on Twitter: 'I follow Sean Avery on Snapchat, and he has this running skit where he goes up to random homeless people sleeping and asks them for the time.'

And Avery appears to have no remorse when questioned about his controversial pastime.

When a Snapchat follower questioned him about why he asks for the time, he shared his reply on his Instagram account.

'F*** u,' he wrote. 'All my expensive watches are for show not the time.'

When approached by PageSix for comment, Avery replied: 'No comment, but if you tell me what street corner [Post columnist] Richard Johnson sleeps on, I will go wake him up.'

I don't think it's the act of asking for the time that people object to. Humiliating poor people on the street for entertainment and "laughs" is what's objectionable.

You're right, homeless people are there to harass us.

It would be a real shame if someone you know ends up on the street due to metal illness (or a number of other reasons) and you would need to empathize rather than stigmatize.

One, harassment is

"Harassment is a form of discrimination. It involves any unwanted physical or verbal behaviour that offends or humiliates you. Generally, harassment is a behaviour that persists over time"

Harassment is a form of bullying as well. As the saying goes, if you support it, you're just as guilty.

Your attitude towards this act is exactly rly the problem. Sean Avery doea this to get attention, that's his choice. But it influences others to do similar acts. And although Avery may have no true harmful intent, it only takes one idiot to take it to the next level.

Avery clearly has no regard for the public, clearly has no regard for his influence from celebrity and clearly has no regard for basic human rights such as being free from harassment.

Homeless people, although displeasing to look at for some people, annoying to others... it's a societal issue that is simply sad all around.

Avery is exploiting their hardship for what? Some followers who are clearly idiots themselves?

And I have no hesitation with putting you in that group of idiots too, "tfi racing"...

Walk out of Waterfront Station and see how much harassment you get for smokes, booze, and money. I do not condone his actions, and Avery is a piece of trash. No one should be homeless in Canada and the safety net exists to prevent this. It is by choice they live out on the streets.

A friend of mine has dealt with a lot of homeless people recently and he was telling me he thought mental illness affected a good amount of them. It's sad that some people might not have the friends, family, resources or mental capacity to help their situation. Everyone needs some help or support along the way. Regardless of their reasons for being there if you look down on homeless people and treat them poorly I can't imagine you being a very good of a person.

I think it's one thing to harass people for things you need (or think you need) like money, booze, smokes, whatever.

It's entirely different to harass people simply to get a few laughs for yourself and people on the internet. Pretty slimey and stupid on Avery's part.

This is just flat out incorrect. And not all homeless people beg. And I've never had any person who does beg do anything after I said, "sorry, no". Most actually say "OK thanks anyway" or something to that effect. Of course, if I reacted in a way which suggested I thought they were lesser, maybe they'd respond differently too.

My buddies and I always joke about writing a sitcom. In it there was going to be a total douchbag character. In addition to harassing women, one of his things was going to be going up to homeless people and asking them for the time or for dollar and stuff like that. Now I can’t use that because Sean Avery is already that guy.
