Default Router /Modem Issue / Gremlinz in the Interwebz?

Hey Everyone, thanks in advance for any help.

I have an issue that I am truly Puzzled On...

I signed up for the new Shaw 150, went and picked up the modem, had them bridge it and add it to my account. I got home, installed it and everything worked fine... for a bit...

I had my new Modem hooked up to my DIR-655 (Dlink) Router, with a DIR-1520 Wireless Range Booster Upstairs.

My PC is hardwired into my router, and I had all of my wireless devices connected to my Range Booster.

I got home later that night and all my wireless devices started losing connection and speed. Sometimes they got 15mb/s sometimes 90mb/s.

That is when the trouble started....

I went downstairs to contact Shaw and everything was fine with the Modem, that is when my PC lost hardwire connection from my Router. The modem had appeared to have stopped sending a signal to my Router, and everything i tried could not restore it. The little world on the front stayed orange. We tried unbridging and rebridging, changing ports on the Modem, everything, changing settings in my router, and finally a factory reset on the Router... nothing seemed to work.

To get it working for now, I had them un-bridge it so the modem is broadcasting my wireless signal, the PC is hardwired into the Modem and the DIR-1520 is connected to the Modem.

Everything seems to work with this Configuration, but I would really love to use my own Router instead of the one they provided.

Does anyone have any ideas...???

Thanks!

That is an older router (2010ish?) I wouldn't be surprised if you overloaded it and burned it out. Unfortunately these things die, I suspect that is what happened. I've lost a few routers in my day.

Yah... it is a bit older of a router... and I was thinking that is might of what happened, but with technology you never know...

On a side note I was looking at routers at memory express just to get an upgrade.

They now sell spaceships!

Did you restart the PC after trying all of the router troubleshooting? Flush your DNS? If powercycling the modem doesn't resolve things, 99% of the time I find either the DNS flush or PC restart does. Good luck!

I have the exact same router, and will be picking up my new Shaw modem today. Was wondering if it's even worth it to bridge since you figure even the crappier Shaw built in router should beat 6 year old technology. But that router has been such a champ for me, I've literally had zero problems with it the last 6 years. I'd hate to just junk it for no good reason.

I rebooted my computer more yesterday than i have in the last year!!

I unplugged and re plugged the router/modem many man times.

I never did flush the DNS, but the modem was not sending the signal to the router at all...

You can try bridging it The Yen Man, depending on your house layout will depict which one will work better.

I found that my DIR 655 gave amazing full house signal (basement and 2 levels) until I installed my laminate floor with aluminum underlay!

I have heard from people that this new shaw modem is actually really good, but I cannot myself Verify.

I would think the only way to be sure is to reset it back to a modem/router, and try using that for a bit. Then bridge it again.

Honestly you may get better performance with the built in than an older router like that. I think the Hiltron supports AC too. So if you have any devices that have AC (not just N) you will see a good jump in performance.

The other option is to go to Staples or Best Buy and get a good router and try with that. If still no improvement you can bring it back.

This issue is actually not as uncommon as you think. It would appear several people have an issue with their router showing no Link or no connection to the Hitron.

I know my Asus N56u says its not connected to the Hitron all the time and will only find the connection on a reboot or refresh. Oddly enough my Asus N66u does not display this issue so I have been using it as my main Router and the 56u as an AP.

If you are in the Market for another router I would suggest something that can run modified firmware like advanced tomato or Padavan. These custom firmwares take out the bloat and make vast improvements over the originals. The n66u is probably the best sub $100 router out there if you do not have AC devices in your home.

The only problem I had with the 655 when bridging it was that I wasn't getting the promised 150 mbps. But after much internet researching and talking to Shaw tech support, I double checked my laptop specs and discovered both my laptops did not have gigabit ethernet.

I've ordered a dual band usb adapter from Amazon Prime and that should give my laptop the higher speeds, hopefully.

Not sure if the following will help.

I'm getting weird wifi speed that I mentioned in the other thread. I didn't get a chance to call shaw tech support yet.

But... I did upgrade my ram in my two laptops ($14 for 4GB crucial in Amazon warehouse. Not sure why priced that way because 2x 4GB kits are nearly $40 bucks in the warehouse)

EDIT: Still there

https://www.amazon.ca/Crucial-DDR3-1...4&keywords=ram

vs

https://www.amazon.ca/Crucial-4GBx2-...2&keywords=ram

I did see my internet speeds go up via wifi from around 10-20 to 30-40. I am not sure if this is just luck or if the RAM is helping. The laptops do see faster and smoother going from 4/8GB to 8/12GB respectively.

I will still be giving Shaw tech support a call once I return from my long weekend trip.
