Icon34 Preds re-sign Jarnkrok (6 years, $2mil AAV)

Nashville Predators @PredsNHL
Calle Jarnkrok re-signs with the #Preds via a 6-year, $12 million deal.

weird to see such a low AAV for that long.

shrewd signing by Poile, holy cow. This will look like a huge steal in a couple of years ... the kid should fire his agent.

Smaller player who's 25 and just broke out with 30 points...

Could be a solid signing like devo22 suggests, but the certainty is probably worth it for a player like Jarnkrok who is far from a lock to be much of an NHL player.

What a weird contract from a player perspective. The league has shown that even 30-40 point players can be worth $3+ million, yet he commits to $2 million for SIX years?

At the same age Dustin Boyd was putting up comparable numbers on a team similar to the Predators (i.e. not a ton of depth to have to go through for the forwards).

At the same age Nigel Dawes was outscoring Jarnkrok.

I'm sure both players in retrospect would have loved a contract like this. The guy has 57 points in the NHL, is about to turn 25 and just signed a $12,000,000.00 guaranteed contract. It's not a bad situation for a player like him.

He could continue to find mild success, he could break out. Those both will look good for the Predators.

He could also find himself out of the league.

A very strange contract. Player is almost betting against himself. I understand wanting the security but it almost makes you question the player's mindset - don't you prefer him wanting to prove he's worth more?

6 x 2?

That's gotta be one of the weirder contracts of the past few years.

I think you'll see more of these types of contracts for bottom 6 players.

Why would a team do that though? That's a brutal term.

Guaranteed money. For a guy like him I don't see why not.

And the league has also shown that there isn't room for 30-40 point players so why not take the money while it is being offered?

It's a strange signing because we don't see a lot of these deals but I think it's smart for a player to take guaranteed income rather than bra fringe AHLer making $70,000 a year.

Contract is definitely an interesting one. I am still rooting for Jarnkrok to take it to the next level. I really liked him when he was coming through the wings system. When they traded him and Eaves for stupid Legwand that was when I gave up on Ken Holland as a GM. (straw that broke the camels back type moment)

A buddy just said to me this morning, this is a contract I would try and sign in NHL be a GM haha so true.

Can't really recall a contract like this, I wonder if we start to see more of them like suggested above.

Strange. If he sucks in a few years, that's 6-8 years of cap hit for a buyout. If he's good, then this could be the best contract in the league.

Could go either way, but for a guy who could be out of the league just as easily I think he loves this. I think he LOVES his agent right now. 12 Mil guaranteed is a decent chunk of money over a 6 year span for a bottom 6 player. The financial security has to be worth something to him.

This reminds me of the Josi contract, which is arguably the best contract in the NHL. He signed a 4x7 contract.

Poille signs young players to very long deals with low term. He's great at evaluating their long term potential. The Forsberg deal is also good.

I wouldn't put something like this on the agent. Some players prefer staying in their current city and home over taking more money to go elsewhere. I'm sure Nashville management is grateful for this very cap friendly deal and won't rush to trade him until his contract nears the end.

That said, if this was the case, management took full advantage of the leverage they had in negotiating the dollars of this deal.
