At what age do kids really comprehend big stories? 9? 10 years old? I was born in 79. I don't remember the Flames 86 run at all. I kind of remember the Olympics here in Calgary but not much since I didn't go to any events. I may have went to Olympic Plaza once with my parents (my brother got to see the ski jump Eddie the Eagle huhuhu).
I was 9 in 89 and that seems to be the year I started noticing/remembering things. Flames won the Cup in May, Tiananmen massacre in June. Michael Chang won the French Open the same day. Then the fall Berlin Wall in October.
But if I had to pick one, it would be Tiananmen Square. I didn't even know what the news was before that. My dad has to walk me through it.

Strangely I remember Mt St Helen's erupting in 1980. I was 2. I remember becuase after seeing it on TV I had a dream that the lava had reached our house and still have a vivid memory of it coming up to the front step.
While only a year older than you, I remember lots about the Olympics here.
Tiananmen Square was one of our generational moments.
For me, born in 1976, I remember discussions about NEP, interest rates and job losses in Calgary. Not one particular story mind you. i'll try to think of others.

The Lockerbie plane bombing & crash. I was only 4, but I remember my Mom watching the news about it non-stop. After that I remember the coverage of the Berlin Wall coming down.
For some reason the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989 stands out for me, I would have been 7.
I remember the '88 torch relay passed through our town and we had some kind of presentation to our class and were given a box of bronze/silver/gold crayons and they had a sample torch for us to look at. But I didn't really connect that dots to the "olympics" until a number of years later on that one.
OJ. And outside 9/11 there isn't a single story in my lifetime that is even remotely close. And sometimes I wonder if OJ wasn't bigger than 9/11. In some ways it was, maybe not as life changing but the following of the trial was utterly insane.

I remember the news being about the Vietnam war. I was 4-6.
I just didn't understand how gorillas could shoot guns or drive tanks.
I remember my uncle being very mad at a hockey game in 1972. He almost smashed the TV. I was 6.
My 8 year old has a solid grasp on current world events. We talk about everything. Compared to the neighbours and his teammates, he is pretty mature though.

I lived near San Francisco in 1989 in a little city called Walnut Creek. I distinctly remember the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. I remember hiding under a desk in our condo while everything shook. I remember watching the news and seeing a carousel at Disneyland being shaken. And I very clearly remember this video on the news.
I remember my mom and me yelling at the TV to the red car "you can make it, keep going!".

I also remember the Challenger Explosion in 1986.
I'm the same age and thought mine was the Challenger, until I read your post and realized I definitely remember Mt. St. Helens.
The first real news story I sort of "comprehended" was John Lennon's murder. Don't know how much I really did comprehend though, because Reagan was shot a few months later and at the time I thought it was the same guy (doing the shooting).

Mine was the OKC federal building bombing. I was 13 and was so close it shook my school. The first tine I really ever remembering feeling unsafe in this world.
The first big thing I remember is Terry Fox's marathon and his death.
I also did some searching for big events in the late 70s and early 80s. I recall hearing about the Titanic, I don't remember what I knew about it back then, but in 1981 they discovered it's ruins. So it left some impression on me.

Hilarious. I thought exactly the same thing when I heard snippets of news about Vietnam and Cambodia. I was picturing something like Planet of the Apes.
I remember watching the '76 Olympics on TV. I was 6. Earliest news event I remember is Elvis Presley dying in '77. I was 7 and shopping with my mom at K-Mart when the news came over the radio. I also remember Jimmy Carter being elected that same year.
