DB Cooper
There is a real possibility that one of the three most infamous crimes is about to be solved.
The three crimes are
1) Who killed Jimmy Hoffa and where is his body
2) Who was Jack the Ripper
3) Who was DB Cooper and what happened to him.
In 1971 DB Cooper boarded a 727 and threatened to explode a bomb if he didn't get $200,000.00. The authorities agreed, and the plane landed to let the passengers go and give Cooper his money and two civillian grade back parachutes and one front parachute.
The plane took off again and Cooper ordered all of the aircraft personal into the cockpit.
Some where over the woods in Washington State the plane suffered a pressure loss and DB Cooper was never seen again as he parachuted to safety with his $200,000.00
No trace of him was found until some of the ransom money was found in 1980.
Now thanks to a tip, the FBI is trying to match fingerprints from the plane to a man who died 10 years ago.
Maybe one of the great unsolved crimes is about to be solved.

Would be interesting to see if he was able to survive. I think the real reason he was never caught is because he never survived and his body is out in the wilderness undiscovered. But if he did what an incredible story.

ya, same with the 3 guys who were the only ones to ever escape from Alcatraz. it's very poetic to think that they managed to make it to shore and lived their lives in secrecy, but in reality their rafts likely sank and they became fish food. i don't see how anyone who was as infamous as DB Cooper was after his hijacking could have stayed under the radar for so long

Why only 200k? If you're going to hijack a plane, you should make it at least a million.

In 1971 dollars. 200K in 1971 is over $1M in todays dollars.

I imagine weight would be a consideration as well. A million bucks in $100 bills weighs 10kg. If it was in $20 bills, that is 50kg. Not an insignificant weight to add to a parachute jump I would assume.
Someone in the know might be able to shed some more light on that though.

I watched a History Channel doc on this a few months ago, and I gotta say, the case for Kenneth Christiansen being the guy was pretty damn compelling.

This is one of my favorite stories from childhood. The ingenuity and brass it took to even try the scheme has always fascinated me, and really sparks the imagination.
Sounds a little silly, but a big part of me hopes that the case is never solved.

I thought Charles Westmoreland admitted to it already?

Not to stray off-topic much, but wasn't the Zodiac Killer among the most notorious as well?

I can see jumping out of a little prop plane, but how do you jump out of a jet?

By instructing the pilot to fly low and relatively slow.

You have to maintain glide and that ain't 'slow' in a jet. I would think it would be very hard to hop out.

And from what I recall, he specifically hijacked a 727 as it was the one jet at the time that a person could theoretically jump out of; due to the location of the engines.

I believe he told the crew to keep the plane at 10,000 feet, and 15 degree flaps, which would keep the plane around 200 knots.

All the money probably got wrenched out of his hands as he was knocked senseless scraping along the side of the fuselage, leaving an unconscious bruise falling from the sky unable to deply the chute.
