The Sabres and O'Reilly have agreed to a contract extension, a source told The Buffalo News on Friday morning. The long-term deal will be announced soon.

No terms yet, but it's gonna be a big one.

That was a really big acquisition by the Sabres. ROR provides them with much needed "padding" in their forward core. If their young centres can't shoulder the load ROR can more than capably step in. He can also add weight and tenacity on the wing as well or on either the powerplay or penalty kill.
He also tends to play full seasons. I don't think he's played below 70 games in the last five seasons.
Anyway. Solid contributor to a rapidly rebuilding team.

For the sake of the Sabres, and the Flames eventual Monahan negotiations, I hope it's nowhere near the 7x7 deal that was rumoured.

I would guess more -- he wanted a lot of money from Colorado and I don't imagine that's changed a whole lot. More like 7X7.5 range -- this deal will take him to 32 years old, 7 years all UFA. This is the big contract of his career.

More like Jay will be calling ROR for his cut.

Exciting time to be a Sabres fan. They went through some very rough years with blatant tanking and accumulated some decent assets. In addition to Reinhart and Eichel adding RoR, Kane, and Bogosian (at the cost of Myers) are good moves that should make this a better team next year.

ROR is very good. But he isn't worth anything near 7 mil.

I would actually bet you real money that you are way low.
He's making 6 million right now.

iMO, ROR is a very good player, however, unless he dramatically improves, he slots in as a middle upper end 2C and an exceptional 3C on a legit Cup contender.
I believe that anything over 6.25- 6.5 per annum long term is an overpayment and will put the Sabres pay scale and cap management in jeopardy as they move forward.

While I agree he's going to get a bit overpaid here, it won't hurt us. We have $17 million in cap space right now and no other big contracts that need to be renewed.

There's a reason Avalanche fans call him Ryan O'money. Reports were he was looking for 7.5M or 8.5M from them

Can someone explain to me when ROR was anointed an elite center or player for that matter? To me he seems more Damond Langkow than true franchise center and that may be a generous comparison.

Feaster said so...and the Avs agreed And the Flames dodged a huge bullet by the Av's matching.
Right after he was supposed to be the #1C to carry the Flames to the playoffs he went back to the Av's and led them to first overall draft pick.

He may not be elite but he is a much better player than Langkow, at least offensively.
Over his last 3 seasons he is a 60 pt guy on a team stacked with good offensive players where he had to fight for icetime. That pt. total would put him top 25 in the NHL among C's.
Add him to a club that has Eichel as its main C in a couple years and he will be among the best 2nd line C's in the NHL as he can play PP and PK on top of his regular duties.
That doesn't mean he is worth 7 million per, but it does suggest he should be very well compensated as he is a very good player....and it appears he will be cashing in.

OK using your logic then, the following year he led them to first place in the toughest division in the league.
You are one odd duck when it comes to stats and breakdowns of them.
