Default Sportsnet ranks top 20 defensemen by the numbers

Both Brodie and Giordano make the cut

Quote:
12:#T. Just Brodie#| Offence: 9.57/25 | Defence: 21.11/35 | Transition: 28.14/40 | Total: 58.82/100

One half of Calgary’s incredible first pairing, T.J. Brodie came out of junior as an offensive defenceman, but now takes a secondary or even tertiary role in that regard in Calgary. He has diversified his game to be a defensive stalwart and transition beast. Brodie is all about efficiency, rarely dumping the puck out of his zone or into the opponents, and he’s excellent at finding players in the neutral zone to create rushes.

Quote:
2:#Mark Giordano | Offence: 15.44/25 | Defence: 24.65/35 | Transition: 27.72/40 | Total: 67.81/100

After two seasons where he could have easily won the Norris Trophy had he not been injured for the last quarter of the year, Giordano finally played a full season and set career highs in goals and points. His offensive numbers are great, but what truly sets him apart is his play without the puck, where he ranks as the best defensive defenceman in the NHL. Giordano is quick, physical, and smart, and when he does win the puck away from opponents, he’s also an elite transition player. He’s everything you want in a franchise defenceman, even if he is 32 years old already.

Gio listed as #2 behind Karlsson!

Well, Mark Giordano is ranked #2, and Johnny Gaudreau was ranked lower at his position, clearly this will affect Johnny's negotations. Expect Gaudreau to sign for $6.5M/year. Book it.

Finally is right...also he needs to rank first just due to the fact he plays defence so much better than the guy they listed first...just my opinion.

I'm sure somebody will complain about the use of the stats/eye test that certain players are high/low/missing.

Wow. That is high praise for Mark Giordano.

It's a good list and awesome praise for Gio and Brodie. Only complaint is Keith should not be at number 13, even if he is 33. He is Chicago.

I'm removing my homer glasses and am going to say that I'm not sure I agree with Gio's ranking. Gio is good, no doubt. But best overall defensive defencemen in the NHL, therefore the world? IMO Doughty and maybe a couple others are ahead of him in that regard.

As happy as I am to see his ranked #2, there's no way he's ahead of guys like Keith, Doughty or even possibly Brodie. Especially given that the main knock on Keith in the article was him being 33. Gio is almost 33....

Doughty is the reigning Norris winner and this is said about him

While his pass success rate may be the driving force behind his reputation as a mistake-free hockey player, Doughty isn’t afraid to take risks, and it does occasionally blow up on him.
If that is why his ranking got him knocked down, you could easily say the same about Gio. Especially with how he played in the first 1/4 of last season.

I like this ranking because it ranks Flames players high. I do not like other rankings that rank them low.

As much as I like Brodie, he's overrated on this board when this board compares the two. Gio has better numbers, plays better defensively. He's just not as flashy as Brodie.

As far as being a defensive defenceman, I've always thought Gio is good for his size and for a guy who looks to score. But not the best defensive defenceman in the league, like a Rod Langway.

I don't disagree at all, but in the end I remain pretty happy about the Flames having two defensemen that are both in the conversation of being top-ten in the world.

That's a win.

LOL, it's sad that you can predict fan reactions to the quality of something by how their own team's players are ranked.
