Friedman's 30 thoughts: Asking price for Brian Elliott? Hutton has a role?
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/3...c-possibility/
Lots of rumors/speculation including this tidbit on the Flames:
Quote:
2. It’s also very possible Tim Murray doesn’t want to deal No. 8 because he’s trying to moving up, anywhere from three (Columbus) to six (Calgary). This is a home game for the Sabres and Murray loves to gamble.
|
Quote:
4. The Calgary Flames’ goalie search continues. GM Brad Treliving has his hands everywhere, so it’s difficult to pin down the exact target, but I think Brian Elliott would be very happy to go there. The Flames have three second-rounders (35, 54, 56) and you could see the St. Louis Blues liking that first one. Where it gets complicated is if Blues GM Doug Armstrong wants assurances of extra compensation in case Calgary extends Elliott. Elliott comes at a lower cost in both trade pieces and contract than Ben Bishop, and will have a major chip on his shoulder after his last few games in Missouri. I’ve seen reports the ask for Marc-Andre Fleury is worth a first-round pick, but it might be even more than that. He’s signed long-term.

5. Another goalie I could see with a role in Calgary? Carter Hutton.

Hutton would be strictly for the backup position.

Hutton would be after Reimer in the grand scheme of things which means the weekend didnt go so well for Treliving and Co.

Yeah, I don't see Hutton as a starter.

Hutton would be a really good backup IMO, he's clearly not a starter but I think he could be a backup that steps up if need be.

Hutton wouldn't be a starter, but to replace Ortio as backup? I could see it. If it has been decided that Ortio won't develop into starter, and there are better backups on the market, why stick with Ortio?
Elliott definitely wouldn't be near the top of my list.
- 31 years old
- The most starts he's handled was 55, and it was in 09/10.
- Hasn't played more than 46 games since 09/10.
- UFA after 16/17, and do we really have an appetite to extend a 32 year old for the years he's going to want (likely 4-5?).
No thanks to Elliott.

Elliot really is a great exit route to the madness of Pittsburgh and Tampa and their asking prices.
If they want the first + then you simply say f this, I'm going to get Elliot and at worst revisit this next season, when you two dummies are in panic mode.

I agree that acquisition cost and cap hit is just too high for Bishop or Fleury, and I don't think either of them is that much better than Elliott to warrant the difference.

Maybe the Bishop and Fleury talks are just setting the ceiling for Brad to operate under.

Elliott has been my hope all along. Ideal contract situation as well. Bishop is better, but not $3M better

He also is the only established goalie with a cheap enough contract that will allow the team to pursue Reimer as well. Both are established tandem 1A/1B goalies and I think they would be great here playing about 40 games each.

A 2nd round pick for Elliot? Boy was i wrong about cheap acquisition cost for trading for a goalie. I would have thought a 3rd/4th rounder would be the price for Elliot.

As I said in another thread, we better be cautious in case the Flames trade for a backup first. Too many people will be up in arms because of all the talk about Fleury, Bishop etc. and then they get a backup?

Yup, Expansion did nothing to put a dent in those asking prices.

I'm sure asking prices are still high on properties in London today as well. Doesn't mean buyers are going to give them that.

I can believe Pittsburgh wants a first round pick plus for Fleury, but I can't expect that they will get that kind of return.

I'll judge BT's summer success rate in Oct. Right now I love the way BT is playing this game.

I don't think a 2nd round pick for an established NHL starter from one of the leagues best teams is a hefty price to pay. Especially when he is cheap, and likely to be cheaper than pretty much every other option going forward.
Pull the trigger on Elliott.
