NHLPA uses escalator. Salary cap will be $73 million next season
Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Cap is indeed $73M. Floor is $54M
An increase of $1.6M over last season.

I was hoping they wouldn't use it, would force GMs to go even more bat#### crazy trying to manage their rosters. Good for summer entertainment.

Nice. The forecast I worked on last summer just as a fun exercise ended up with a $72.6M cap for next season. I was close!

As though there was any doubt they wouldnt use their escalator.

IIRC they could have gone up another couple of M. This shows a bit of slowing down of using the escalator.

And I think they will be giving 18% (?) back in escrow. After tax, depending on jurisdiction, they will only be getting about 40% of salary, less in Montreal.

I think the Flames can use the extra wiggle room as I will be surprised if Gaudreau and Monahan do not combine for at least $14M, then add in a $5M+ goalie

Flames should have ~$23.2M in space. Still need to figure out Colborne, Jooris, and a backup. In addition to who you mentioned.

and the escrow doesn't simply disappear.
It can (depending on how things play out with actual revenues and whether teams over-spent in the aggregate), but they can also get all of it back.

Every year since the cap came in, the teams overspent in the aggregate. Not once, IIRC, have the players got all the escrow money back.

That 23.2M disappears pretty quickly.
Frolic - 4.3
Backland - 3.575
Stajan - 3.125
Bouma - 2.2
Colborne -3.0 ?
Bollig - 1.25
Jooris - 1.0 ?
Bennett - 0.925
Gaudreau - 6.75 ?
Monahan - 6.25 ?
Shinkaruk - 0.863 My guess to make the team
Ferland - 0.825
Raymond - 2.2
Hathaway - 0.69 another bet to make the team
That's 14 forwards for $37.903M
Defence
Giordano - 6.75
Hamilton - 5.75
Wideman - 5.25
Brodie - 4.65
Engelland - 2.917
Jokipakka - 0.9
Nakladal - 1.0 ?
Total $65.093M
plus Smid at 3.5
Grand total - $68.593M
leaving only - $4.407M for goalies.
If Smid goes on LTI, we'll have $7.907M space for goalies once the season is underway but IIRC he still counts on our opening day cap, so we can send down Hathaway and Shinkaruk for the day, to gain some and bring our cap space to $5.96M.
Conclusion unless something gives (Wideman or Smid traded or bought out) is to spend no more than $5M for our NO.1 goalie and $.96M for our backup.
Of course somethings always change over the summer so this exercise is mostly futile but just in case this is how we currently sit.

You know, when you put it this way, it really does make Subban's $10MM donation to the Montreal Children's Hospital that much more impressive.
He basically gave away 2 entire years of after tax salary. Not a lot of people would do that. As rich as Subban or not.

Don't forget to add 2 m in bonuses for Bennett. Potential I guess. But I wouldn't bet against him this year.

Trade Colborne, let Jooris walk, sign Ortio to a one year deal.
