Default About 50 people killed at gay nightclub in Florida

http://m.calgarysun.com/2016/06/12/a...-club-shooting

Awful news to start a Sunday.

Quote:
ORLANDO, Fla. -- A gunman wielding an assault-type rifle and a handgun took hostages and opened fire inside a gay Florida nightclub, killing approximately 50 people and wounding 53 others before dying in a gunfight with SWAT officers, police said Sunday.
Police Chief John Mina also said the shooter had some sort of "suspicious device." He said the suspect exchanged gunfire with an officer working at the club around 2 a.m., then went back inside and took hostages among more than 300 people inside.
Around 5 a.m., authorities sent in a SWAT team to rescue the hostages, and the suspect then died in a gunfight with those officers. Mina said police have not determined an exact number of casualties, but that "approximately 20" people were dead inside the club.

Shooter's name is Omar Mir Seddique Mateen (US citizen). FBI saying he has ties to Islamic extremism, but has no criminal record. So it looks much like San Bernadino to this point.

EDIT: A CNN reporter says he worked as a security guard in Fort Pierce, FLA, and rented a car to drive to Orlando in order to carry out the shooting.

So its not terrorism but a hate crime?

I just don't get how something so innocuous as two people kissing can lead to this kind of response and devastation.

Whoever this prick was, he had a whole lot of hate inside him that cant be entirely tied to homophobia only.

It's still terrorism. The motivation may not be religious, but this is still terrorism. He did this to threaten and terrorize an entire group of people.

It's still obviously terrorism. EDIT: SCD beat me to it.

As for whether it has anything to do with religion, well, we can just take his dad's word, but the guy has ties to religious extremism and became infuriated at a public display of affection between two men. I for one cannot ever recall anger and resentment towards homosexuals being connected in any way to religion, particularly among the highly devout...

I think we have moved past the ability of analysis to fully understand such things. That country is burning.

I'm just curious if it's getting any worse or better, or if the media is skewing what's happening.

Unclear if it was intended as such, but adopted as a gay anthem:

I've paid my dues
Time after time.
I've done my sentence
But committed no crime.
And bad mistakes ‒
I've made a few.
I've had my share of sand kicked in my face
But I've come through.

(And I need just go on and on, and on, and on)

We are the champions, my friends,
And we'll keep on fighting 'til the end.
We are the champions.
We are the champions.
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions of the world

A lot of people online seem to be attacking gun control over this.

...that makes me angry. I don't care about gun control in the least, but this is not a gun control issue. This is hatred, and intolerance.

Prayers to all those impacted by this sub-human, disgusting act.

You really don't get that Islamicist terrorists are religious fundamentalists, and that religious fundamentalists hate homosexuality?

Depends on your parameters of better or worse ......compared to when?

Its hard to fathom but gun violence is way way down from where it was 20 years ago.

Mass shootings however, are up quite a bit.
