Default Joe Colborne ‘closer’ to new deal with Calgary Flames

Wonder what kind of a deal he will get?

Hopefully they're discounting his press level seats for next season. The prices are pretty steep.

Personally, I think he'll get a 3 x 2.75 deal, but we already have a thread discussing this.

Would he take term at the expense of AAV?

1.75M x 5Y

I didn't think we had the cap space to resign him. Must be good news on the buyout or trade front to make room for new contracts.

...wut?

The Flames have $49.75 million committed to 2016-17. That leaves $21.5 million in cap space. Assuming:

Gaudreau: $7 million
Monahan: $6 million
Reimer: $3 million
Jooris: $850k
Nakladal: $1 million
Ortio: $850k

That leaves $2.8 million to sign Colborne. Easy. And that's if we don't get rid of Wideman.

Again, we already have another thread discussing this, and maybe this should stay there, but you're talking about a 35-40% discount on a "reasonable" salary and adding a couple of years (40% more length)

I know the math doesn't work out exactly the same, but it seems you are giving him less money/year over more time, and the total earned is almost the same.

Great for the Flames, but I don't know why he would want to do that...

Those are a lot of assumptions that haven't happened. Especially in net, which is a big mystery and could cost significantly more. With all those contracts still unsigned and the net still undetermined, $2.8 million cuts way to close to the cap. It also doesn't include any UFA's the Flames might be interested in signing. There are far to many variables that could change the cap to suggest it's an easy sign.

Sooo.... the same team as last year except with Reimer/Ortio instead of Hiller/Ramo? I don't think that will be enough for the playoffs. I also doubt Reimer signs here for $3m, more like $4m and Colborne will get at least $3m. That leaves them with no room to improve the team in other areas.

There isn't really room to give Colborne the patented Calgary Flames third liner retirement contract unless some of the other previous mistakes are jettisoned.

It's going to be annoying if we lose out on upgrading the team's top 6 just so we can keep Colborne (obviously the other overpaid guys aren't helping either). I wouldn't have an issue with him getting his $3m if Wideman, Smid, Raymond, Bouma and Stajan weren't already creating so much dead space. Enough's enough.
