It's not about the retailers, it is about what banks allow Apple Pay. Before I could only load my AE card to Apple pay and only use it at retailers that accept AE tap, Now I have my RBC debit card loaded into Appple pay and can use it at retailers that accept interac tap.

I was feeling like a bit of a chump when they announced the SE a year after I paid cash for a 5s, now I feel even dumber.

This is excellent news. Of course I'm aligned with Scotiabank who is last to do most everything. The articles I'm reading though say it should be about a month for them to get on board.
Hopefully the fact that it's far more secure will allow for it to bypass the transaction limit for touch payments, but I'm not holding my breath on that one.
An Apple Watch is suddenly far more interesting to me.
edit: according to the TD twitter:

@jacobgorban The tap limit is $100 or if using your CC, up to your available limit. No news yet for business support, but stay tuned! ^DH

Just added my cards, this is great!
Any place that accepts tap will accept apple pay, unless companies start pulling out like a few places in the US did, but I don't see that happening up here.

I thought the big banks were trying to go their own way and develop a rival technology. Looks like they gave up or one of them cracked. Just setup my cards, interested to try it out!

Paid for my lunch with my phone (debit card) it works pretty slick. I really like the fact you have to use your fingerprint in conjunction makes it feel safer than the card flash pay... gonna try with my Apple Watch next.

I believe that was a ploy to put pressure on Apple to play nice with them.

There's a list at the bottom of the page. Not bad - Tim's, Petro Canada and McD's come to mind.
The wife will want to use this.

I've been tapping to pay with my Android for a month or so now using the RBC app. It's very handy and has been flawless. Can an Apple guy use the RBC app in the same way an Android guy can?
I don't get what Apple pay is, either, or what it has over what I'm doing. With the RBC app (in case you don't know), I click on RBC wallet, select my card (debit or Visa) and just tap.
My wife has an Apple phone so maybe it's worth setting up for her.

Hope they add CapitalOne in Canada soon... Their rewards are pretty awesome, so it's my daily driver card... Already have an Amex for bigger/select purchases that I added to my phone for ####s and giggles, but Amex tap is pretty limited in it's usability...Mastercard means I could go out without my wallet for lunch!

Apple Pay launches by double pressing the home button, then your fingerprint authenticates. You can do it from the lock screen, no having to open an app.
As I said earlier, businesses don't need to 'support' this for it to work. When a store asks for your method of payment, you can simply say 'debit' or 'credit' and tap your phone to the machine, as if it were your card.
Another benefit with this will be in app purchases, apps (line Cineplex) can integrate it as a method of payment, and you can use the info stored on your phone... A lot more secure than all the different apps out there having your credit card info stored on their end.

I read that the phone recognizes when it's close to a pay terminal and automatically brings up payment processing?

Correct. No fumbling for an App. Slick and very intuitive, as most Apple processes are.
