Default Tell me about San Diego

Looking to tap the CP travel knowledge base.
Taking the wife and kids (3) to San Diego at the end of June. Looking to stay at a hotel on the beach, with nice pools. Not doing anything ultra fancy, just the expected; zoo, maybe sea world. Mostly looking to relax at the beach.
What areas should I be looking at for Hotels on the beach?
Anything besides the Zoo and Sea World that you would recommend?
We will only be there for 4 nights.

Any advice is much appreciated.

The air craft carrier is pretty cool.

As well as the national park on the tip of the otherside of the bay.

Yeah that aircraft carrier is the tits. Sea World is cool, too. Zoo is great. Have you considered renting a house? We rented one in LaJolla last year and it was great
Short walk to the ocean too.

San Diego is one of my favorite cities in North America. If you want to stay at the beach, check out Coronado Island. The old downtown area there is really cool and the beach is top notch. As for things to do, Petcock Park, home of the Padres is really cool. Even if you don't like baseball, watching a game there is a blast. Check out the Gaslamp district in downtown it's where all the dining and entertainment is. It can get very lively at night (not sure if it's somewhere to take the kids in the evening). In terms of good restaurants, I'm a huge fan of Hodads (great burgers, was featured on Triple D) and Basic Pizza (maybe the best pizza I've had).

Enjoy

I would suggest Legoland. Not as hectic as Disneyland and just as fun for a 3 year old.

I've stayed at Humphrey's Half Moon Resort a couple times. It's not on the beach, but it has a great pool that kids love. It is right on the water with a spectacular view of the city too. Pretty central as well.

As for the city, there's a ton to do. Seaworld (that is, if you're not against captivity of orcas), the zoo, the aircraft carrier is a must, eat Mexican in the Gaslamp District every night, Padres game... I could go on.

In addition to the Zoo, there is the Wild Animal Park (which, I think is now called the Safari Park) about a half hour northeast of San Diego, near Escondido. It's much larger than the Zoo, so the animals have a lot more room to roam and the enclosures are closer to the animals' natural habitats.

The Safari Park is part of the San Diego Zoo system. They also have a conservatory. It is easily the best zoo I've been to, but expensive. Also, watch out for staff really trying to pressure you into becoming a member.

Sea World is controversial. I never had time to visit it when I was there, but I was half tempted to just to spite PETA, even if the park is pretty much infamous for poor/cruel treatment of its animals.

If your family likes baseball, Petco Park is a great place to watch a game.

Best Western Island Palms on Shelter Island is awesome. Right on a marina with some fantastic views. A few pools and an awesome restaurant and outdoor patio for breakfasts etc. Was very affordable when we were there in December and were upgraded for free.

Youre with family, but even so, San Diego has some of the best microbreweries in the US.

If you visit the aircraft carrier, the flight simulator is an absolute must. What a blast!

The Safari Park > the Zoo.

Try to get out to La Jolla. It's beautiful.

Balboa Park is cool. The Italian restaurant there is fantastic. More of an adult destination, though.

Balboa Park is good for a few hours walk. The Botanical Gardens are worth a visit if you like that sort of stuff.

Don't bother with Tijuana.

You can easily spend 2 days at the zoo. Get there early to see most of the animals moving around.

Thanks for all the recommendations! You guys rock.
I'll check out hotels on Coronado or even renting a home. I like the aircraft carrier and safari park ideas also.
CP is awesome.
