Default Why haven't we mentioned Kelly McCrimmon ?

I have followed the coaching speculation threads as much as possible. I may have missed some things, but why haven't we talked about Kelly McCrimmon ? The guy has been the head coach and manager of the Brandon Wheat Kings since the 04-05 season. He has lead them to the play offs every single year, he lost in the WHL Finals twice and this year he won the Championship. Many believe if anyone is going to beat the stacked London Knights team this year it will be his squad. To me it sounds like he fits Trelivings mold pretty well. He's coached a winning franchise, he's a younger coach, and from my knowledge is extremely respected in the sport.

These are some of the players he coached on their way to the NHL. Eric Fehr, Matt Calvert, Brayden Schenn, Mark Stone.
Some of the current prospects he's coached. Scott Glenie, Ryan Pulock, John Quenville, Ryan Pilon, Morgan Klimchuk, Ivan Provorov, he's now in the process of forming a number 1 pick in next years draft Nolan Patrick.

When you look at the players he's developed one thing immediately jumps out at me. Two Way guys, he most definitely installs defensive abilities into his forwards. The types of guys you win with.

Maybe he's not the best guy for the job, but I think he could definitely be a candidate. Just my 2 cents.

I think McCrimmon fits the profile more of a first-timer NHL assistant coach, or an NHL assistant GM candidate. It's a weird combo being both head coach and GM, but he's been doing it pretty well now - for almost 30 years.

So the experience is definitely there, but the lack of it at the NHL or even at the AHL level makes me edgy about thrusting him into a more prominent role like that of head coach.

And this couldn't go into one of the other many coaching threads?

It's the same topics being discussed in multiple threads, coaching and draft. Merge them plz.

I'm sure if Kelly wants to be a candidate, he'll apply. Quite honestly no one except the Flames management know the list. So he might be in there.

I'm confident they'll be interviewing every coach they believe to be extremely promising. Burke whenever he scouts talks to both coaches of the junior, college or AHL team. The people Burke has talked with or worked with must be very comprehensive. Treliving is hard working and has his own huge network of connections as well. Between Burke and Treliving I think they have a pretty comprehensive idea of who should be talked to from college, junior, AHL and the NHL.

I'm not worried at all that they are overlooking anybody. It's almost impossible to guess who might be on their list or near the top of their list. We can see that from the media reports.

But yes McCrimmon does have an impressive track record with Brandon. Personally I'm not too concerned about guessing who they may or may not interview. I'm confident the search will be conducted thoroughly and that Treliving will settle on a promising candidate who he can work closely with and who shares his philosophy and vision.

Can't wait for the announcement frankly, I think it will be extremely hard to guess themes coach before its announced.

Why does this have its own thread? We have 2 or 3 new coach threads already.

Because some of us come here for some quick news and prefer not to spend hours and hours catching up on mega-threads.

Having to go to 2-3 threads to try and get news is not much better. Either way the mods can decide if this is a waste of a thread

If we create a thread for every possible coaching candidate it will be next to impossible keeping the E=NG thread on the first page. Just saying.

This isn't a news thread though. It's a discussion thread, and the title of it was clear, concise, and made its intention very obvious.

I mentioned in one of the other coaching threads and I agree he should get some consideration. I agree that he probably is a bit green for the head coaching job, but I think he is ready to make the step to the bigs as part of a coaching team. I read somewhere that the Leafs looked at him last season to join their staff, but Kelly thought he had a good thing going with this years Brandon team. Seeing how he got to the Mem Cup, I think he might be ready now.

Yeah because there so many other subjects for us to talk about.
I wouldn't sweat the odd redundant thread this time of year

Ah I must have missed it. Yes the Leafs were after him last off season. If he wins the Mem cup I have zero doubt he will be going to a franchise in some capacity.

That's true this could easily go in the 3rd edition of the poll thread we have going on discussing various coaches. Maybe McCrimmon is such an exciting candidate he deserves his own thread? I don't know but I will refrain from discussing the merits of this thread further and let the McCrimmon discussion commence

yeah. wrong word. discussion. opinion. question. not news though. Anyway, the intent is the same. I prefer not having to wade through 12 pages of Jankowski circle jerk to see one coherent point. and I didn't want to derail... just frustrating that there seems to be more discussion about which thoughts go where (which I am now contributing to...)

McCrimmon. Tell me more.

McCrimmon owns the Wheaties. Not that that stopped Brent Sutter...but it needs to be mentioned. Kelly has more than one good thing going for himself in Brandon.

And chalk me up as a guy who hates the mega threads. Happy to see this new idea expressed here.

Yep you are correct. However I think he would definitely like the idea of being so close to home if he does make the jump to the NHL. We must be one of the closest franchises to Bradon.

I am trying to think of a head coach that jumped from the CHL to the NHL and had some success other than Mike Babcock, Hitchcock - maybe the secret is you need to hire a "rooster" as a coach.

This did not work out so well for Greg Gilbert, Dave Cameron.......I guess Willie D is doing ok, but was he not an assistant first?

Willie was a head coach in the AHL before jumping to the NHL.
