Fort McMurray - Donations and charity discussion - (Red Cross tally = $39,596.50)
Moving the discussion and follow-up from the Fort Mac Wildfire Thread here. It just goes to show how amazing this community is, that this needed it's own thread.
The purpose of this thread is to discuss ideas for charity events, fundraising, and things of that nature, that will invariably end up helping the victims of this horrible tragedy.
I will also continue to update the ongoing CP tally of donations to the Red Cross that CP'ers have decided to disclose, either on the forums or in PMs, here. This is not including the amounts that have not been disclosed, and does not include Federal/Government matching. This is not an official CP-driven charity drive, these are just individual donations made by this incredible community. If you have made a donation since this thread was started, and would like it to be included in the tally, please feel free to follow-up with a post below, or in a PM to me. I will do my best to keep the tally updated as I am able to.
If you're planning on making a donation to the Canadian Red Cross, please visit:
https://donate.redcross.ca/ea-action...paign.id=50639
You can also:
• Text FIRES to 45678 to donate $10
• Text REDCROSS to 30333 to donate $5.
Please feel free to add and discuss any other means of charity, and goodwill to help out our neighbours up north.
So far, members of this forum, including their families, and in some cases their workplaces have individually donated more than $39,596.50 to the Canadian Red Cross in emergency relief for the victims of the wild fires in Fort McMurray and area.

I'd like to add that if there is anyone who would like to know if their house is there/gone PM me the address and I'll do my best to look at the satellite images. No promises of course, but I might be able to offer some reassurance to those unsure.

Is Calgary looking for any volunteers to help out, and assist the displaced people that may be looking for temporary housing or meals, etc? I would be down for that.

One of my staff has significant family ties to YMM. I 5X matched my office collective donation. No numbers, but as a point of reference, it is roughly 60X what I donated to pimking.

According to this article on the CBC, $30 million has been raised by the Red Cross so far.
That means, as we here at CP approach the $30k mark, we are responsible for 1/1000 of the total donations at this point.
I'm sure the numbers have gone up a lot since the article was put out but still, this is great stuff to see. Well done everybody.

Something to keep in mind when donating:
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgar...571749?cmp=rss
Unfortunately with the matching it makes more sense to donate to the Red Cross. Maybe the Red Cross could distribute funds to local agencies?
