Choosing the winner at a charity golf tournament
Hello CP! Im trying to be creative on how to choose the winner of a memorial golf fund raiser tournament this coming weekend. Teams of 4, Texas scramble style. I don't want to reward the strongest team as most players are there for fun. Ive thought of "mystery hole" lowest scores, choosing names from a hat but Im looking for something different. Theres 120 golfers if that makes a difference. Any ideas would be great. Thanks

The people that play the best should win.
If you want a couple of secondary prizes for other categories, that's fine.

I'd suggest whoever can drink the most beers in 18 holes, but they are already a winner.

Yah this should be it. Prize for winning and then prizes for other stuff.

Use a pre-selected group of holes to compute a handicap of sorts for each team (your choice which holes and how many to use) then adjust their total scores using that handicap. Don't tell them which holes you're using as handicap holes. I'd suggest 2xPar4, 1xPar3, 1xPar5.

I'm a big fan of the tournies that do a draw for various prizes while you're out golfing and then when you come back to the clubhouse you just check to see if you won. You can still do presentations for lowest score, lowest net, "most fun" (highest score) etc., but I find golf tournaments spend forever going through the motions after you've already been playing for 5-6 hours. Keep it short and sweet.

That is a good point. I took home a lot of prizes at the last tourney I played in because no one stuck around so they just kept giving them out to those who stayed.

Have a pink ball contest. Create a seperate line on the scorecard for pink ball scores. Did this at mens night a week ago
To begin each team gets one pink golf ball and that ball is rotated amongst all team members. If you lose the ball during the round your team is out. Now each player who uses it has to play the entire hole with it and his or her score recorded. At the end of the round all the pink ball scores are tabulated with the team having the lowest score being the winner.

We have done this but you get a sleeve of 3 pink balls with like a 5 stroke penalty for each one lost and elimination after you lose 3.
If you lose 1 and are out people are not as interested. Especially in a tourney where likely most people are not very good at golf, unlike a mens night.

Closest to the pin on one of the par 3s- The better golfers will still have the slight advantage, but as we all have seen, any jebroni can luck out and randomly have a great shot on a par 3. More likely to give you a random winner than best 18 hole score- which will almost always go to the group with the best golfers. Wouldn't make it a mystery hole. You want the hole to be daunting and something everyone hypes up a bit in advance. Closest to the pin is a pretty standard secondary prize though.

Yup, I was one of those jebronis I'm pretty terrible but was able to stick it within 5 feet (probably the best shot I've ever hit). Managed to drain the putt for birdie as well.

Yup, at our company annual golf tournament a while back (the only golf game of the year for me), I hit to about 3 feet on the "closest to the pin" hole.
We always had "best team" (lowest score), "most honest team" (highest score), longest drive (specific hole), closest to the pin (specific hole), and longest putt made (specific hole).

If my experience with people at golf tournaments has taught me anything, it is that awarding it to the team with the better score will just result in more people cheating. Especially if the top prizes are really good.

that's why the top prize is a gift certificate or something like that and the other big prizes you sell raffle tickets for. The more you buy the better your chance to win. The more money goes to the charity.

Have you ever played Beer Golf? Its much like beer pong but over a larger playing surface and using clubs.
Winner takes all.
