Proposed expansion draft rules. Expansion decision expected before 2016 draft.
Since the other thread is getting mega thready
News UpdateDarren Dreger @DarrenDreger
Expansion draft potential. Each team has option of protecting 3d, 7F and I goalie or 8 skaters +1 goalie. Expansion determined before draft
Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
GM's told expansion decision expected before June draft. If expand by 1 team, each team loses 1 player...if two teams, 2 players.
Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
Should clarify: first- and second-year "pros" exempt from potential expansion draft, not necessarily NHL players. Pro includes AHL
Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
Daly says most simple thing to know on expansion draft: teams can only lose one player max if it's expansion by one team; 2 player max if 2
Frank Seravalli @frank_seravalli
Teams must have a certain amount of salary exposed, plus positional concerns. 1st & 2nd yr pros will be exempt; 3rd yr ELC players eligible.
Renaud Lavoie @renlavoietva
GMs will know before the draft if expansion will happen in 17-18. If no vote, no new team will play before 18-19. #nhl
Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
Other pertinent expansion draft detail: teams must expose enough players which total at least 25 percent of previous season's payroll

What constitutes a 1st or 2nd year pro? Would Bennett be considered a first year pro or a 2nd year pro at the end of this year?

The decision to expand is coming this summer.
The earliest the expansion draft could happen is 2017

Too bad, this summer would be perfect. Bennett wouldn't have to be protected, he's only a "2nd" year pro, same with Poirier and Shinkaruk.

The scary part is how many guys that we may want to expose that have NMC's. Sounds like they are suggesting that you have to use a protected spot for anyone with a NMC.
I am not sure who has a no movement clause currently on our roster. Anyone know this?

Believe just Wideman per General Fanager and his contract would be up by the time this happens.
Backstrom also has a NMC but his contract is up this year.

Players with NMC:
Wideman
Players with some form of NTC:
Giordano
Stajan
The NHL's official position is that NMCs don't protect a player from being claimed in the expansion draft. The NHLPA is expected to challenge that.
edit: Well duh. Wideman's contract expires in 2017 so it shouldn't be a concern for an expansion draft.

Stajan and Giordano have NTC clauses, not sure how that works.

IMO, Stajan would be bought out before being put on a protected list ahead of a young asset.
Giordano will likely be on the list anyways.

News UpdatePierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
Bottom line on expansion draft as a few GMs said: each team has potential to lose either a No. 4 or No. 5 D, or a No. 6 or No. 7 F or a G
Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
All of the potential scenarios showed today all had one goalie max protection in expansion draft

Seems like the 3 defense will be our weak spot.
Brodie, Hamilton, Gio
Luckily Andersson and Kylington will still be protected.

Kylington would not be protected if the expansion draft happens after next season, which it probably would.

Phenomenal, we have none of those. Nothing to worry about.

I wonder if the one goalie max protection will work in our favor in shaking loose a goalie from some stubborn sellers this off season.

Would be the summer going into the third year. Does the third year technically start as soon as the season is over or when preseason starts?

Does his ELC slide? I wonder if that would affect his status. He could be a 3rd year pro but technically be on year 1 of his ELC.

Hmm seems it's not as radical as their language was implying. The expansion team will just have slim pickings of waiver wire type players basically. They were talking like this team would be good now. Nah.
I mean,

We would lose a player like a Colborne or Bouma.
