61% is shocking to me. That's an incredible drop off.

Just to be clear, the use of the word "shocking" was from the author
of The Hockey News story and not my personal opinion.

5 Canadian teams made the playoffs last year, including two all Canadian Series
No surprises

No Canadian teams would be a considerable shock to the ratings, for sure. And Rogers would have you believe it's the primary reason.

But 61% is a considerable drop. You'd have to think the miserable quality SN has been feeding us all season – paired with general disdain for Rogers has a lot to do with it as well.

SN has also done an absolutely terrible job promoting the playoffs. "Here's a goal that was scored" is about as much effort as they've put in thus far. There is ultra fun hockey being played right now, and they have done absolutely nothing to draw a casual viewer in. That'll hurt quite a bit when viewers favourite teams are out. Promote a reason for someone to care, and grab onto a team they want to root for. It's not rocket surgery.

Surely Calgary, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Montreal and Ottawa drew a considerable audience. But not by that massive margin.

I heard that an Alabama football practice had higher ratings than all but two of the weekend NHL games in the US.

Edit: inter-squad game, not a practice, but still.

Pretty sure any football game would get more viewers than a Stanley Cup final match between the Blackhawks and Rangers in the US.

the fact Nashville vs. Anaheim is only on SN360 is why I'm not watching that game...

no Canadian teams = huge drop off sure.

production quality = a part of it as well

Yah no Canadian teams is an obvious factor but also a Raptors playoff run and the start of the MLB after a strong last year by the Jays are other ones. Understand the majority of the members on CP aren't basketball fans but many people in Ontario are watching the Raptors even if they aren't necessarily fans thanks to the excitement generated by the team and the city.

The fact that we get poor quality FSN regional broadcasts instead of the vastly superior NBCSN national broadcasts is disappointing and the reason I watch most games on my computer instead of the TV.

Rogers is totally mailing this playoffs in anyway, so it serves them right.

You are correct on each of your points. The Blues-Blackhawks game is on the main Sportsnet channels and more viewers will watch that game. Sportsnet 360 can be part of a separate package or individual channel and that is why there are less viewers.

I wonder if Rogers doesn't want the TSN commentators (Miller and Cuthbert) on their channels.

Why would the casual fan tune in? Everyone one of us here take hockey seriously enough to come here and discuss it 365 days a year, so likely most CPers are watching playoffs because we love puck. But how many fair weather fans tuned out around December when they read we likely wouldnt make the playoffs? Im guess a significant number.

Factor in the amazing weather lately, and i can understand why people would rather be outside on a patio or golfing instead of hanging out indoors watching playoffs.

That's actually a really good point. Gotta be the reason.

Too bad, Cuthbert and Gord Miller are both fantastic still.
