Default Speculation: Dennis Wideman to Edmonton talk on 960

I was listening to a replay of the morning show today where they had Elliot Friedman on talking in general. Towards the end of the clip he was asked a question that was written in his 30 Thoughts piece about a potential for Wideman going to Edmonton in a trade.

Friedman made a few references to there being some hurt feelings within the Flames organization and/or Dennis Wideman's camp about various things. He alluded to "some things said in the hearings" and a reference to some feelings with the training staff.

Anybody have any additional insight on this? How it sounded in the clip was as they were "insiders" talking amongst themselves.

So do the Flames have the beef or is it Wideman who thinks the Flames/medical staff should have handled this differently? In the media the Flames brass seemed quite supportive of him but maybe behind the scenes not so much?

For those wondering here is a link to the clip http://www.sportsnet.ca/960/boomer-m...-round-action/

Around the 17 minute mark is when he discuses the topic in question.

Thanks

I'd be shocked to learn there was animosity between the club and the player.

I'd be even more shocked if Dennis waived his NTC to go to the Oilers.

Man, if he feel mistreated by the training staff in Calgary, he's gonna really have a bad time with them in Mulletville!

Where would he even slot into the lineup in Edmonton with 6 Giordanos ahead of him?

I was going to say they could throw him in net, but the Oilers already have 12 in-his-prime Kiprusoffs.

Serious question, would he be their #1? He would for sure be on the #1 pairing.

He'd be #4 or #5 on the Flames.

Wideman would actually make the Oilers better. So why would we help them?

But they still couldnt afford it and he's got an NTC which he would never waive for Edmonton.

As heep so eloquently put it in the greatest thread evar:

Treliving: "So Dennis, this is really tough and we really value you, but you know we're trying to get younger and....."
Wideman: "Where do you want me to go, Brad?"
Treliving: "The Edmont....

I think it makes sense he helped here when we didn't have enough depth should still have something in the tank to help them out. Not really a fit here anymore at this salary and really hard to move anyhow. He won't all of the sudden push the Oilers ahead of us and if losing him makes the Flames worse than the Oilers we have bigger issues. Addition by subtraction.

you'd probably need a 6x6 already agreed to in principle before Wideman even considered something like that...it would be career suicide to go there in your UFA season.

Getting top line minutes on an offensive team is career suicide? I would say getting bottom pairing minutes on the Flames is more likely to lead to less money in the next contract.

Guys in Wideman's position can't afford to be picky these days. He needs ice time next season, or when he becomes a UFA he'll be just another declining 30-something veteran going around the league cap in hand looking for a tryout.

An offensive team? That word has two meanings, but for some reason I think you used it in the context that they score actual goals.

Let's face it, any time you are considered a good fit on a perennial loser, there can't be a lot of options or gas in the tank anyways.

Good point. Offensive as in not defensive.

Safe to say Wideman will not play another game with the Flames. Treliving has been trying to unload him since the summer but I get the feeling the team doesn't want him back under any circumstances.

I don't think that's a safe assumption. It's a possibility, but not a done deal by any stretch.

If you can get anything substantial for Wideman from any team I think you've gotta take it.

Edmonton have a lot of interesting individual pieces which could be rehabilitated and reintegrated into a decent hockey team with a stronger culture of team play. They are about as desperate for NHL defensemen as any team in the league.

I suppose there might be a fit there. Weird.

The greatest trick the Wideman ever pulled, was convincing the Oil he didn't exist.
