Default I like Jakub Nakladal

As a matter of fact, I really really hope he gets re-signed. He's a better, cheaper Wideman who we could really use on the PP.

What are your thoughts?

Like Schlemko last year, I'm preparing myself for disappointment. While he should slot into our lineup easily, barring a Wideman trade (Which I don't see happening) I bet managment doesn't see room for him.

Would absolutely love to see him back though

I agree with the above sentiments, but I hope he isn't another Schlemko.

No brainer we bring him back. He has amazing power play talent, like surprisingly good. Walks the line well, gets his shot through. Has a ridiculous snapshot one timer and a wrister. He's got size, isn't scared to mix it up. He'll continue to get better in the defensive end.

He basically outplayed Wideman by the end of the year. I don't see how we don't bring him back.

Yes x 100 and if we don't I'm going to be very disappointed. Guy looks like he could be a second pairing guy after another year or two under his belt in the NHL.

We finally had one of these Euro overager signings work out for us and I think it would be very stupid if we didn't resign him.

Much better than Wideman and Engelland.

I would be surprised if the Flames don't re-sign him.

Unlike Shlemko, Nakladal has some size and physicality. He also a much better PP threat. Shlemko was flashier. I think they are both solid bottom-pairing guys defensively.

I don't know if they can move Wideman in the off-season, but injuries happen anyways. Wotherspoon will just be the 7th defencemen until there are injuries, or maybe get a regular rotation in with Jokipakka and Nakladal until there is an injury or there is a trade.

FWIW, I do think that Wideman is going to have a bounce-back season. That seems to be his thing - one bad season, one good one, one bad season, one good one. If that happens, Wideman would not only make the 2nd pairing VERY solid, but his trade value will be very high. I do think it is very tough to fit him in, and if Treliving can trade him for something decent - even a lower-value deal - he will.

Treliving needs to bring him back. The guy is in his prime and brings that heavy shot to the PP. Perfect third pairing guy alongside Engelland.

I feel like he is too slow for regular NHL use. I saw him get burned a couple of times on his foot speed this year.

However... every other part of his game is there. Sign him if he agrees to take extra power skating classes throughout his summers.

I'd be extremely disappointed if they didn't re-sign him. His upside is limited, but he's a useful 3rd pairing guy who might be able to handle more minutes down the road if he works on his skating. Really liked the Jokipakka/Nakladal pairing and want to see it again next season.

Would you guys do 3Y x 950K? Or is that too much term? You do stand to save some money the the two years after, compared to if he has a breakout full season.

I would but I think you'd have to go to at least 1 mil

The one good thing going for Nakladal (and us as fans) is that Wideman was not a Treleving signing. Calgary needs salary cap room next year.

Dougie Hamilton D
5,750,000

Dennis Wideman D
5,250,000

TJ Brodie D
4,650,400

Mark Giordano D
6,750,000

Ladislav Smid D
3,500,000

Deryk Engelland D
2,916,667

Jyrki Jokipakka D
900,000

30 million locked down on defenseman next year, 2 of which are of limited value to Calgary (Wideman and Smid). Giordano is also getting his salary increase next year.

Bad thing? Wideman has a NMC. Treleving needs to work his magic, get Wideman to waive his NMC and somehow still get a 2nd rounder for Wideman .

The proper phrasing is:

I like Nakladal a lot-l

Edit: And IMO, the more pertinent question is: Will Nakladal re-sign with the Flames?

I like Nakladal and Jokipakka as our bottom pairing next year, both are cheap (or going to be) and I feel both can fit into the second pairing in a pinch and of course their size.

Leaving Gio, Brods, Dougie and Engelland as our top 4, or switch Engelland to the bottom pair and replace with one of Joki or Nakladal.

Meaning, Wideman has gotta go..

It's what the Flames needed, size, speed, and a puck moving d-man. I like! Wish the Flames can get rid of Wideman with both Nakladal and Jokipakka looking pretty good.
