Giordano and Brodie not expected to play in World Championships
Giordano not playing for family reasons I can understand, but not sure what Brodie's reasoning would be. He needs to play in the World Championships in order to get a chance to play in the World Cup imo.
It’s pretty clear Mark Giordano isn’t planning to go to the world championship.
Nor does it appear Canada can count on the services of T. J. Brodie, which makes for an interesting debate as people wonder if such decisions would cost either – or both – a shot at the World Cup squad.
The Calgary Flames captain insists his decision hasn’t been finalized, but it’s evident he’d rather team up with his son next month at home than, say, P.K. Subban in Russia.
“Yeah, it’s a tough decision but the first thing that comes to mind is your family,” said the 32-year-old defenceman.

All meaningless tournaments. No point risking injury. Flames are priority #1.

I'd never fault a guy for going, but the whole notion of desperately trying to win hockey Canada's approval for future tournaments or going to experience meaningful winning hockey is so oiler-y that it hurts. Stay home boys, you know what the task at hand is for next year.
I am not going to judge these guys for not wanting to go, but I for one would like them to go. It's not meaningless hockey unless you think it's all meaningless. I think it's cool when any player relishes the chance to represent his country. It's a big deal IMO and not "Oilery".

That's not what I said. Going there because you want hockey Canada's approval or going there because you've never experienced meaningful hockey at the highest level is oiler-y. Going there because you want to represent is great. Conversely, not going is just fine by me.
think gio has earned a break. if he/Brodie doesn't get to go to the World Cup. Oh well.
It's really cool when the Flames are represented, but aside from that, rest up, enjoy your family time, then get back to training hard, so we can crush faces next year.
I wish they'd cancel the World Championships. The only time I like it when Flames go to that tourney is when they are young on the cusp players who could use some more experience. Gio and Brodie don't fit that description, rather they both be healthy to start next season.
IMO, any time you're asked to represent your country on a world stage, it's an honour and you should give it serious consideration. Obviously some reasons to not accept are legitimate, but you shouldn't just blow it off.
And if you see the reactions of the players when they win, you can tell it does end up meaning something. The more a guy like Brodie has a chance to play in high stakes games, the better for his development.
Gio is trending down due to age, good to give the old bones some rest. Brodie played lots of minutes and its probably best he puts his feet up and relaxes in the summer. It's a fun tournament but I can see why players opt to rest instead
Man, I despise that Sportsnet site... It autoplays a giant video, and it's not until you sit through 2 ads that you realize that the video has nothing to do with the story on the page (i.e. Gio likely not going to the World's) but instead is a weeks old video giving the reactions of the Montreal players who did and did not get named to their respective World Cup teams.

Weird thing to say about a guy enjoying a career year
