After six years street hockey is legal on Calgary streets.
Personally I think this is really good news. Playing street hockey on the street keeps kids active and keeps them out of trouble. It's low cost, can be played anytime and is a great way to make friends on your street. With so much emphasis on kids being active, I'm surprised this was ever a law. As a bonus kids can even be an eye in the community.
I played street hockey almost everyday for ten years and not once did we damage any city property or cars. The biggest damage would be from walking on someone's grass to get a stray ball. We all realized that streets are for cars and learned from the older kids that when you see a car, you stop and move your nets. If anything it allowed us to catch our breath. Respect passerby's and they'll respect your game.
Hopefully when we see the police out there they have hockey sticks instead of tickets.
How deplorable of a person would you have to be to ticket a bunch of kids playing street hockey? I doubt any police officer actually enforced that bylaw.
Yeah, it's nice that it's official, but I remember when this bylaw came into affect, police officers were vocally against it and many started carrying hockey sticks in their squad cars and joining in games if they saw them.

Same a-holes who would call the cops on people playing basketball in the middle of the day because it's too noisy.

When I was a kid, probably about 14 or 15, we were written up by a Calgary by-law officer for playing ball hockey in a tennis court. The tennis courts weren't actually being used at that time because the nets hadn't been installed but I guess you can't use a tennis court for anything but tennis.
My kids play almost every day, either on their own or with other kids on the street, and have for a few years. This time of year they might be out there all day on a weekend.
I had no idea it could even be an issue, but I guess it's a reminder we have great neighbours.

Man, we played street hockey day and night, all year round for years. We only had one neighbour that hated us for it, he always honked at us and swore at us to get out of the way when he drove past. Jerk.

There was a news story a couple years ago that I can't find anymore. Kids were playing street hockey in a cul de sac. Someone didn't like it, called bylaw and the kids parents were fined. I think it was $75 per kid or something but can't remember.
Here's another one. Police told the kids they can't be playing street hockey on the street in 2010.
Wait what, it was illegal? That itself is news to me haha.
Here's another one for you. You can't wash your car on city streets or in your driveway with anything but water. This sort of makes a bit of sense though. Who knows what chemicals people use that would wash into drainage, maybe it's toxic or corrosive. Who knows.
And another: Dogs aren't allowed in playground zones.

I could see if it was a busy road but I've never once in two decades of living here have seen kids playing street hockey in a location that would cause an issue.
Someone I know had a neighbor call bylaw on his 10 year old kids and friends for playing street hockey in the cul-de-sac. Apparently the neighbor didn't even come and speak with the kids or parent first...just went straight to bi-law. ridiculous.
bylaw officer was not happy to have to enforce the rules and tell the 10 year olds to get off the street
