I'm not a big football fan but I do love analytical articles like this one today in the LA Times which weighs the evolution of the game from running to passing . . . . and notes that the team scoring the first touchdown in an average NFL game will win 71% of the time.
The author calls this "a race for the lead" and that passing is the fastest way to jump start to a lead.
That's rather interesting since my main complaint with the NHL is the undue predictability of seeing a team scoring first winning or tying 75% of the time.
