Are you adding square footage somehow? We have a two-piece ensuite that we're planning on converting into a three-piece as well, but it's very small so we have to take over the walk-in closet to make it work.

I have never done it before, but I would have to think the cost would be in the $900 to $2,000 range depending on how much plumbing needs to be done, what kind of shower stall or tub and surround you get and how much wall do you need to change.
To me the key would be, how easy is it to plumb the drain.

I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination as I have never done a bathroom Reno for myself before. However, my brother has and I have a few construction buddies and everyone says you're looking at $10K for a complete bathroom. I'm helping my mom do a Reno and this is the number that has come up as well.

My $900 assumed the cheapest possible stand up shower, very little plumbing and very minimal wall moving.

900 gets you a bucket and a large box of wet wipes from Costco.

Yes - I'm sorry but a 900 budget is very unrealistic. I will not hazard a guess without knowing details but your budget will need to be increased.
Edit - I see it wasn't OP that laid out the starting budget of 900. But the comment still stands

Kind of depends on what is below. If it's an unfinished basement or basement with removable ceiling tiles you won't have much trouble. If it's a drywalled basement it will be more work. If it's a second floor bathroom there's going to be lots more work.

Haha $900, are you suggesting he take a used shower off kijiji and literally just push it into the bathroom and hope everything works itself out from there?

Lol that pretty much describes the bathroom I just tore apart for Canehdiaman. Easily the best example I've come across of what not to do.

The last one i did cost 6500 for everything but that was pretty cheap because i did it for family but the shower and floors also had to be tiled also including drywall mudding and sanding, painting and all new electrical it can get alot more expensive than that though

We're likely going to have to knock out a wall to add space

Well that'll add an extra $55 minimum. You should have mentioned that first, now the $900 suggestion looks silly.

I gutted a 3 pc bathroom to the studs and completely rebuilt it for $2500 last year. That included a couple tools like a tile saw and a little sawmax saw. That's probably the cheapest you can do it. Cheapest contractor quote was $9,800. But that's par for the course. If you're going to get a contractor to do it, multiply your cost by 4 and you'll be close.

Even if Home Depot gave you the stand up shower for free it would still likely cost in the 4-10k range.

I figured anywhere for $3K if you do everything your self, to $12K if you need to move walls/wiring and pay someone.
Could easily balloon to $15k-$20K if you want to spend money on the fixtures, but if you have to ask a web forum how much it will cost I assume your not on that page.
You'll have to tear down some drywall. $20 trip to dump
Move water lines / drains $100 + install
probably move some wiring $100 + install
replace drywall/tape/paint/baseboard... $250 + install
probably redo the flooring, I assume it's only about 30-40 sqft of flooring $300 + install
probably replace the vanity to one of those compact one piece units. $200-$500
Buy a shower stall. $1K-$2K
installation of all all the new fixtures

$900 is probably actually possible if you do every bit of work yourself and go with the cheapest possible fixtures. I've actually re-done bathrooms on rentals for about that. Certainly wouldn't do that on my own home though, and if you're paying anyone to do any of the work it'll go way up from there. I think $10K+ if you're paying someone else for everything and using decent quality fixtures is a good estimate.
