Oh well they're out of the race anyways and means their young stud McGowan will remain in the rotation which will help him for next year if he sticks with the big club out of camp. I'm just glad they're making sure it's going to heal properly and not taking a chance rushing him back, it'd be awful if the bone didn't set properly.

Yeah, the Jays season was done when they lost 3 of 4 in Detroit. Right now they'll be luckey to stay above .500 without Halladay. But it will teach the rest of the bunch to battle and gut it out. Too bad though, it would be interesting to see what they could have done had Halladay and Lilly not got injured. Halladay was great right from the get go, and Lilly was coming around. Still you have to like what you've seen from the Jays this year a lot more than what they showed last year.

Things are looking up for the Jays, I guess they'll have to wait until next season to build on that. Another year of missing the playoffs in TO... Not really a shocker.

Hopefully they use the rest of the season to get the young guys some good playing time. No point in bringing Lilly back either. Let the young arms pitch and keep Adams and Hill out there every day. Koskie and Hinske can take turns sitting out.
This team should be positioned well for next year. They can increase the payroll and take a shot at the playoffs.

Things are looking up for the Jays. They still need another big bat for the middle of the lineup...I would suggest a first baseman, and another starting pitcher. They have stuck around longer then almost anyone would have thought.

It's been great watching the Jays this year. They're a really gutsy team with a good attitude. Even with Halliday and Lilly, though, they're still a step away from being a contender.
I really hope they can finish above .500 this year and make a good run of it in 2006. Road trip to Seattle for a Jays-Mariners series, anyone?

I agree with Flickered's assesment of the ball club. One more arm and a big bat. The only thing is where do you fit that bat in?
Wells and Rios are all locks not to be traded. Catlanatto is pretty close to being one as well, and Johnson is perfect for subbing in against leftys and coming off the bench.
Koskie, Adams, and Hill aren't going anywhere. I'd like to think that Hudson isn't either but you never know. He's still young and for his glove alone he's a huge assset. Hillenbrand has been arguably the best jay over the entire year which makes it hard to think he'd get traded unless it was in a deal for an All Star or close to. There aren't going to be any takers for Hinske, due to his contract and play, but to me having him come off the bench and sub in when needed, is a good fit. He's been the best jay of late and has a really good attitude as Gibbons has stated numerous times. Zaun and Quiroz most likley take the catching role. So where do you bring in a bat? Somebodys gonna have to be traded, to make room for a possible FA or traded for another player. The Jays defintley could use a bat, the offense has been good but with all the runners LOB it makes it pretty obvious.

Well I think the extra bat needs to be aquired to play first base and hit cleanup. The Jays need a guy who is a 30 home run 100 RBI guy to hit in that spot. Someone who is a legit power threat because having one guy in Wells just isn't enough to compete in that division. That way you can have a lineup like
Adams SS- has been good as a leadoff hitter, and is learning to take pitches. Needs to work on his defence
Catalonotto LF- good contact situational guy
Wells CF- even with a poor start looks to be a 280-300 hitter with 30 HR 100RBI's
First Baseman - the power guy to back up Wells and benfit 5 and 6 hitters
Hillenbrand DH - 20-25 HR guy at best and is better suited to hitting 5th.
Koskie 3B - He's had a tough year at the dish but 6th is likely where he belongs
Rios RF - He has all the tools to eventually move up, but make him earn it
Zaun C - This is usually where catchers hit anyways.
Hudson 2B - If he's able to hit .270 and put 10 out of the park thats enough production for what he gives in the field.
Extras would be Hill, Hinske, Johson, Quiroz or another catcher if you want to give Quiroz a full year in the minors. Hinske just doesn't hit enough to be a full time first baseman, but he would be a good bench guy. Him and Johnson both run the bases well so they're good late inning pinch runner types. Hill should get enough at bats between playing short, third, and DH. It would give the Jays a nice lineup that doesn't give any easy outs. When you're up against the Yankees and Red Sox you need that extra guy who can turn the game with one swing of the bat.

Here are a few guys that could play 1B for the Jays next season, all of them are free agents at the end of the year.
Mike Piazza-probably more of a DH.
Raffi Steriods Palmeiro
Kevin Millar-lacks power
Paul Konerko-seems to be rumored to becoming a Jay every season
Dmitri Young-Tigers team option is his contract status
Erubiel Durazo-missed most of this season, team option, but I would be shocked if the A's bring him back. They have Johnson and Barton ready to play.

I don't see the Sox bringing back Millar to be honest, but he does have enough of a reputation due to the Sox run last year that some big team would be willing to throw money at him, and Piazza will as well. I don't think Young will be in TO, Konerko and Durazo look like it for me. And with Durazo being an A right now, maybe JP follows his script and lands him.
I still think we'll see the Jays go the trade route, there not gonna loose anybody this year, no free agents.

Yeah of all the guys on Flick's list the only one I think who would give the Jays what they need is Konerko. Palmeiro is getting up there in age, and the whole steroid thing has to make you wonder. Although I'm sure he'd be happy to come to Toronto where the Leafs signing Clark Wilm gets more press than him on juice ever will locally. I should have added above that this power hitter would preferably be a left handed hitter since Wells and Hillenbrand are already righties and the team lacks a lefty with pop outside of Koskie.

After watching the Phillies play last night I am almost convinced that they will move Thome in the offseason to make room for Howard. Maybe the Jays could try for him. Lefthanded powerhitter as long as he stays healthy, can play 1B or DH.

Thome has a big salary, though. Unless Philly was willing to pick up some of that, I'd stay away.
