Flames Flames recall Wotherspoon on emergency basis. Nakladal out for precautionary reasons

Calgary Flames @NHLFlames
The #Flames have recalled Tyler Wotherspoon from the @AHLHeat on an emergency basis ~

looks like Nakladal needs more time to recover from his eye injury

Dang. Nothing against Wotherspoon, but I've really taken a liking to Nakladal's game (and of course his charming personality in interviews haha).

I hope Nakladal's stint in the NHL has motivated him to work hard over the summer (and sign with the Flames) and he becomes the bottom pairing guy we need.

Tip of the hat to Treliving and the organization for the plan to reduce the roster to 20 so that they could keep utilizing the emergency recall rule.

They are the first team that I have heard of doing it (though it could certainly be the case that others were doing it before them).

How exactly does that rule work?

Teams are allowed 4 non-emergency call ups after the trade deadline and unlimited emergency call ups.

An emergency call up can be used when a team can't dress 12 forwards 6 defencemen and 2 goalies. By staying at the bare minimum roster, the Flames can easily rotate players from Stockton whenever they need one without using one of the 4 call ups.

Teams have a 23 man roster, in order to have subs around in case someone can't play.

After the trade deadline, teams are allowed to make only 4 more (standard) recalls.

However, if a team doesn't have 12 forwards, or 6 defensemen, or 2 goalies available to dress because of injuries, they can recall a player on an emergency recall basis, and that doesn't count as one of the 4 standard recalls. There is no limit to the number of emergency recalls (as far as I know).

With only 20 men on the roster, every time someone is banged up, they can call up a player.

IT's brilliant

Edit: why even bother?

If an injury reduces you below the minimum number of healthy skaters at any position (12 forwards, 6 d-men, 2 goalies) then you can recall a replacement player on an emergency basis and it doesn't use one of the 4 recalls that are allowed post-deadline. You can even recall signed players from junior on an emergency basis, that is how we recalled Baertschi from junior one year and how we recalled goalie Ty Garner from junior the year we had like 8 goalie injuries.

Thanks for the explanations. That is indeed pretty smart on Treliving's part to keep the roster at 20.

Treliving is good at the nuts and bolts aspects of managing.

Can really only do it if you're not in a playoff spot. Believe the Leafs are doing something similar as they had to send a couple of guys back the other day.

Wotherspoon was excellent during his last spell, almost looked poised to take a regular shift in the NHL. I'm happy he can build on that, if only for one more game.

Officially returned back to Stockton.

@RyanNPike

According to the AHL site, the #Flames have reassigned Tyler Wotherspoon back to Stockton.
