QOTD: Russell's Value
what do you see the Flames bringing back should they deal Russell?

He's worth a second rounder or a middle road prospect. Might do better than that if there's a bidding war or a lack of defensemen available.

If Polak is netting a 2nd and M.Weber a 3rd, on top of the media's recent proclamation that Russell is worth 5.5, I'd say we will get a 1st rounder for him...

I put hockey trade because I don't think it'll just be Russell alone being dealt. I could see a deal with the pens where they give up Murray and something else for Russell and something else or to the Stars for Nishkawhatever and some kind of cap dump for Russell and someone else.
I think he'll be part of a bigger deal so to me that's a hockey trade.

Given the lack of d available and since he would be going to a contender, meaning the first will be a low first, I say he nets us that low first. I would settle for two seconds, or a decent prospect and pick back as well.

I think a late first would be good value for Russell.
That said I'm not sure if the Flames are going to target picks this year. By the sounds of it this years draft isn't very deep. That, combined with the fact that the Flames would probably like someone who is going to have a more immediate impact, tells me the Flames might try to get themselves a decent prospect, who is on the cusp of being an NHL player, who fills a need on this team.
Of course now that you've put up a poll about Russell's value, the Flames will announce Russell re-signing within 48 hours.

I suspect there will be disagreement on what constitutes a top prospect (e.g. Is the Pittsburgh goalie a top prospect?), but value wise I think he alone is worth a 1st rounder or a top prospect.
What I'm hoping will happen is that he and Hudler are packaged for Nichuskin.

I would expect two picks back - but not a first rounder. A second and a third seem most likely too me. I suspect a team adding Russell at the trade deadline sees him more as some depth insurance.

I think a 2nd rounder straight up. Anything more than that would be a huge win.
I don't buy the $5 million talk.

Also think it's a second. I don't see anything more, but maybe I underestimate the market.

He's going to garner a late 1st round pick actually...
Normally I would say he's worth a 2nd but his type is in high demand as a playoff rental.
He's a shot blocking machine.
If he doesn't get a 1st he could easily get a Shinkaruk type prospect in return (or late 1st round equivalent).
Should be fun to see this go down. Stock those cupboards!

Or this...
Even though the Pens said Murray is off the table, I think they will have a hard time resisting Russell+Hudler.

Market value seems to be a 1st after the polak trade. Will they get someone to pay that? Or would the flames even want that in a bad draft.

I said 1st rounder as the Dman market is so weak. Russell has a very affordable cap hit and has been getting pumped up by the Flames and media for some time

1st rounder or a top prospect.
If Mike Weber gets a 3rd, and Roman Polak essentially gets 2 2nds, then Russell is worth a 1st.

I picked a top prospect, more because I think that is where the Flames are shopping. I feel with a good pick of their own this year, the team would prefer a guy who can step in sooner, as they transition away from veteran UFAs to plug holes. Also, as he has a lot of value, the Flames will be able to dictate the market as the deadline gets closer.

how nice would it be if a bubble team like the pens traded their first for Russell without protecting it, didn't make the playoffs and ended up winning one of the top 3 spots lol. I'm sure any team that trades their first will protect it but my question is that if it's protected and it wins, and it becomes the following years pick and that one wins too, what would happen?
