The #leafs now own 12 picks for the 2016 draft.

It's nice but still only three in the top 60. Having two in each of rounds three-six is awesome but for a team that blew it totally up you'd like to see atleast two more 2nd rounders added.

First proper rental of the season? 4th round pick and a minor prospect for a bottom 6 centre on a cheap cap hit.
Does this trade help set the market for some of the better rentals out there?

they're probably looking to move up the draft by packaging up some 3rds.
more picks = more options

Hope this opens the floodgates a little. Trades are fun, even small ones.

True.
Can always wait for Darryl Sutter to trade down though to re-coup the picks.
Polak might get them a top 60 pick. Do they have anyone else to unload this year?

Got to think Jones has better value. So Jones for 3rd + Prospect ?

Why would Jones have better value? Matthias plays the more important position (centre). Matthias had 18 goals last year, Jones had 14 in less games.
I think they'd be pretty close in value.

To be fair, our 2 best players were drafted in the 4th round.

I totally thought we, the CP collective, had decided to trade our poster polak. Seemed too much to get for him. I thought maybe a 6th

I'd move him for future considerations.

A conditional 7th, just so he can get confused and angry over giving up picks for departing UFAs.
Oh wait...

There's some assumptions in that. They don't necessarily get Pittsburgh's pick this year and they could lose their 3rd to Detroit or New Jersey for Babcock/Lamarillio.
That said, the NHLPA should bargain to limit the number of picks one team has. A team having a million picks just means some of the draft picks end up being screwed because a team can't possibly sign them all and stay under the contract limit.

Everything that isn't nailed down?
Reimer
Spaling
Parenteau
Arcabello
Boyes
Are all UFAs after this year.

Yeah sorry, don't mean to belittle later round picks, I'd love that many selections just adding that most of them are middle-late round.

Has that been an issue, ever?
If quality players are cut loose because of that other teams will surely be there to snatch them up.

Its not a big issue unless you are one of those players and end up being shafted because the team owns your right for 2-4 years and can't sign you. I don't have numbers but I'd assume teams are much more likely to sign their draft picks rather than some unsigned 6th round pick from 2 years ago.
The won't negotiate for it, but teams should have limit on guys they can own rights on so they can't just hoard players not under contract.
