Default new/used car question

So I've been driving a 2009 wrangler, and its time to move on from it.

maintenance on it is becoming a bit of a nightmare and is going to become fairly costly.

so I'm shopping for something used but still fairly new, with below 50 thousand clicks.

I'm also focusing on imports because they just seem to be more bullet proof and the reviews are better.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with Hyundai. I owned one 30 years ago and their reputation and reviews are certainly better now.

They seem to have good gas mileage, and they seem pretty feature rich and pricing reasonable, I was looking at some Tuscon's and was wondering if anyone had any experience or thoughts about them?

Really, an 09 with maintenance being a nightmare? How many KMs?

Haven't seen Pylon post in awhile, he's usually a great car guy to ask, especially imports and VW fits the bill.

I don't know anything about Hyundai.

It's a Chrysler, so that doesn't surprise me one bit. My 300C AWD was an awesome car, but I sold it with only 100,000 on it. I've been in Hondas and Toyotas that were less trouble with twice the kms.

Christ I never thought I'd say this, but I'm also thinking of getting a Hyundai. I'll be looking at a Tuscon for my wife as well shortly. Friend of mine just got a new Elantra and it's great value

Unfortunately that's the reality of any Chrysler product.

Let me put it this way.

I'm at about 96k

The ball joints are starting to go. I'm told that they start going after 6 oil changes. But that's about $1400.00

My rear brakes are starting to get to that point. $600.00 at at least

Tires at 100k is obout $1000.00

Even though I change the oil regularly and do all of the other maintenance stuff, I'm starting to lose oil.

My emergency brake cable snapped the other day. That's going to be about 4 to 5 bills unless I do it myself.

I'm on my third windshield.

If I hadn't been taking care of it, this would be something that I deserve.

As it stands, I'm probably not going to get much for a trade in.

Because of the current economy I don't want to spend a ton on a car, probably in the 20 to 22 k range.

I'm kind of sad because I finished paying for the jeep last year and its nice not making payments.

But the mechanic said that if you want to be a dodge guy you have to reconcile that the suspensions don't last and they tend to have problems as they get older and they're expensive to maintain.

Somewhat off-topic, but have you considered looking at Subaru?

To answer your question, we have owned 2 Hyundai vehicles.

One was a 2003(?) or so Santa Fe and a 2008 Entourage.

Both were great vehicles. We had no problems with either.

We are only getting ride of the van ('08) because we got my wife an AWD vehicle, because we do a lot of winter driving during hockey season.

She loved both those vehicles.

Its a possibility, I've had friends that have bought them but weren't stunningly positive about them.

But I'm always open to.

No problems with the electrical? I'd consider yourself lucky.

What do you figure it's worth right now?

A Hyundai 30 years ago? Did you have a Pony?

Build quality and reliability is way better now. I'd rank Kia and Hyundai and Subaru just behind Nissan and Toyota, with Honda ahead of them all.

I don't know, I looked up some black book values.

They showed between, 14,000 and 18,000.

Trade in value of 12k.

I doubt I would get much in terms of a trade in for it because of its condition.

I would probably be willing to sell it pretty reasonably.

I understand getting rid of the Jeep, but damn, a Tucson? Are you also starting to experience signs of menopause?

Stealth22 is on the right path... you're prime for Subaru ownership. It'll give you solid off-road capability (not like the Wrangler, but better than most), but with added reliability and quality. It also won't drive like a fat pig on-road, like the Wrangler. They don't have the personality they used to (and personally I find them rather ugly these days), but they are a good option for someone who wants a reliable all-weather solution.

My dad owned a Hyundai new from the dealer and it was great mechanically but their after service had a few issues. He was having problems with the keys they provided and the immobilizer all the time and it took them 4 different service calls to fix properly.

Basically it seemed like the service dept staff didn't know what to look for until we complained to the manager and he stepped in and sorted things out. Not sure if this was a training problem or just with the specific dealer.

Mileage was good and the car overall was great otherwise.

Subaru has weak A/C so don't buy one if you are a fat guy

Yeah, I'd think twice on the Tucson, too. I rented one in San Diego last year. That thing was so lame and boring, I couldn't believe they could even sell one.

If you're going to get a crossover, just look at a car. Cars are so much more fun to drive. Crossovers are huge, heavy, have unnecessarily high ground clearance, are pigs on gas, handle like crap, and don't even have that much interior room.

Right now, I keep having to sacrifice the cars I like for what works better as a family car (two kids). If you don't have young kids, get a GTI or something and then you'll be having fun everyday.

It's not about driving something that makes you a manly-man, it's about not driving a soulless appliance on wheels. I always took the Captain for having a bit more of a personality than that.

I have an '08 Sante Fe that I've been very happy with. We bought it new, and at the time the options were way cheaper on the Hyundai than any of the other imports, so it's much more fully featured.

I've been very happy with it mechanically, I've put very little money into it, and it runs great.
