Default I LOVE comic books!

There. I said it. I'm a total geek to some I guess, but I have read and collected comics since I was 12. I am constantly amazed at people who still think comics are for little kids and mock adults who read/buy them, while in Europe and Japan, comics are seen in a totally different light.

Anyhow. I need some new stuff to read as I have been busy the last couple of years being daddy, I am out of the loop somewhat. I'm a HUGE Frank Miller fan. I just re-read The Dark Knight Returns and his Daredevil run. I also have pretty much every Hellboy story ever.

So whats out there that I could pick up in trade paperback form or reasonably priced back issues?

I've wanted to get some. Other than the famous ones, I don't really know anything about comics. I went into a store in August and got the book with the original bunch of Batman (well, 'The Batman') comics.

I really wanted X-Men, but there are a few different X-Men series, and what looked like the original one didn't have Collection 1 available (looked sold, 2, 3 & 4 were there).

You should definately pick up Y the Last man and Fables. Both are vertigo titles. The owner of Phoenix Comics North is a CP member. Ask him if he'll give a discount! hehe. I'm currently reading this new mouse guard series. Pretty good but it only comes out every 2nd month.

Try the Dark Knight Returns Bobblehead. You won't be disappointed. Also, the Sin City comics are fantastic as well.

Check you local library, most have graphic novel sections.

I just finished a run of John Constantine: Hellblazer trades, recommended.

Y the last man and Fables are great.

Other offbeats to try - Preacher and Transmetropolitian

Ed Brubaker's Catwoman has become a very cool noir-type of book

The graphic novel version of "A History of Violence" was better than the movie.

100 bullets is great, but you need to start at volume #1

If you are looking for superheroes try going back to the JLA written by Grant Morrison.

I got my first comic book at the 7-11 accross from McNicoll in 1979 - been collecting ever since. There was a time when there were no comic shops in the south end, I had to take the C-train downtown and hoof it across the centre street bridge to a shop a couple of blocks on the other side of the river.

Transformers: Infiltration/Stormbringer
Transformers: Beast Wars
Transformers: Hearts of Steel
and
G.I. JOE/Transformers

One of these is not like the other...

You should try to work out a CP discount. Usually they have one for regular customers.

Most stores in TO offer 25%, but there is a bit of a war going on now with books sold at the US price (30-40% off)

I would probably stop by and drop a few bucks there if there was a discount when I am in town.

How can i forget Preacher! Any comic with a guy having sex with a chicken and then a cyclops getting peed on needs to be read! It's a great series and it's all on trade paperback.

The owner is Mikephoen. Doesnt' post a lot on here but is on here quite alot. I think he just likes to see me get grilled with my criticism of Kobasew. hehe.
I'll talk to him about a CP'er discount.

My guess is you've read them already, but if you haven't check out Alan Moore's graphic novels--Watchmen is the best one, but V for Vendetta is pretty good too. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is his weakest work in my opinion, but still far better than that train wreck they called a movie. Interestingly, Watchmen and V for Vendetta are actually pretty topical given the political climate in the US today.

Watchmen is a classic - read it again keeping in mind that the heroes were supposed to be the Charlton characters - Rorsach = the Question, The Comedian = Peacemaker, Dr. Manhattan = Capt. Atom.

Also, for fun, some fan re-wrote the story as "What if Stan Lee wrote the Watchmen", it is hilarious.

I am a Marvel Comics and Spawn fan. I like some Manga comics I got in Japan too. I got one that is the story of the famous Samurai Miyamoto Musashi. I can only read Japanese a little bit but the there is lots of action and cool graphics.

I love comi... er, sequential art too!! Here are a few to take a look at at the stands.

If you haven't seen it already, I highly recommend "the Exterminators", another really great Vertigo title. It's got great plot and characters, as well as fantastic art from Tony Moore, the original "Walking Dead" artist. It's about 7 issues in, so there might be a trade coming soon. Definitely worth reading from the beginning. "Fables", as mentioned, looks like it's starting an interesting arc as well and might be at a good jumping in point.

Also, if you're a Frank Miller fan, check out "300", his take on a battle between an outnumbered Spartan army and the Persians. I believe it's being made into a movie.

Garth Ennis has been fantastic on "Punisher", and has a new series of a bunch of anti-super hero vigilantes, "the Boys". The first issue was excellent.

Except for that Y the last man and Fables that were mentioned before, I have actually read everything on your list. Preacher is great. Loved it.

Funny, I really didn't like 300 for some reason. Maybe I'll read it again. I'm in the middle of re-reading the Watchmen as well.

Thanks, I'll have to figure out where to find them (perhaps Amazon if I don't see them locally - I seem to have the worst luck at finding stuff in stock)
