Default 16 y.o. player dies from puck hitting his neck

Figured it probably worth a thread. 16 years old Junior Hockey League captain Alexander Orekhov had his neck hit by the puck, damaging his neck spine. It happened on January 14th. He was in hospital since, and today he died from that injury.

Damn. That's unfortunate. And for anyone who isn't sure, this would be the Russian junior league.

I think I'm going to start wearing a neck guard.

Would that help? I think those help more for cuts. Its not much protection in terms of taking a shot in the neck.

Not in a disrespectful way but I didn't know 16 year olds could shoot hard enough to do that kind of damage.

So sad to hear.

It might help dampen the blow and reduce damage... but not quite so much if you're dealing with a booming slapshot or a laser of a wrist shot.

Wow scary stuff. This could have been my fate in junior if I wasn't wearing a neck guard. I took a slapper right in the neck while blocking a shot and lost my breath for a good 20 seconds. If I wasn't wearing a neck guard who knows how much damage would have been done. I ended up with a puck shaped bruise on my neck for a long time after.

Not to be disrespectful, but have you been to a Junior game? Or a Midget game? Those kids can shoot pretty hard. Kids are getting cracked shinpads in Bantam from blocking shots.

Sad and tragic news.

Did he get hit the same spot as Langkow? That was a scary moment.

The shot might have come from a 17-19 year old if this was a junior game. Regardless there are some big 6'+ 200lb kids out there these days that can shoot pretty damn hard

My understanding was that it hit the back of the neck (a la Langkow) where the neck guard is just a piece of Velcro.

In my ideal world, shoulder pads would have a small neck cuff, like a mini turtleneck, to protect the neck from skates and other hard impacts. Not exactly the coolest looking, and would need to be designed to not restrict motion, but I feel like there's room to improve on neck protection.

I may invest in a neck guard along with wearing a dangler just because of something like this. Through, I am not a big fan of wearing either one.

Unfortunate and sad. Also reinforces the danger shot blockers like Russell and Bouma expose themselves to in the ordinary course of doing their job.

So does this mean the NHL will be forced make sweeping changes to equipment regulations? Neck guards, less powerful sticks and no more slap shots? Wait never mind, it's only fighting related deaths that need to be prevented

They really should. Hard rubber disks flying around at 100 mph+. Fiberglass spears. Blades on everyones feet. It's actually really stupid that NHL players don't wear cages. Or have proper neck protection.

I have yes, but like mentioned it reminds me of the Langkow injury. I guess it's all matters on where you get hit.
