Both the La Loche Community School and elementary school in northern Saskatchewan are in lock down, according to the school's Facebook page.

A student in La Loche confirms there was a shooting at the community school this afternoon. A Facebook post on the school's page says there is currently an emergency occurring at the Dene Building of the school.

The post says the elementary school is also under a lock down. The school is asking the public to stay clear.

No one is being allowed in or out until further notice is given by the RCMP, according to the post.

More to come...

According to a Facebook post Friday afternoon by the La Loche Community School, the district was dealing with what it called an “emergency” and was “asking the public to stay away while the matter is resolved by the RCMP.”

The provincial government confirmed that there has been “a very serious incident but the information is unclear,” saying the “situation is dynamic and still unfolding at this time.”

La Loche.. is a rough place. I have 'visited' it once, that was one to many times.

That tends to happen when the school itself is posting on Facebook that it is in lockdown.

Calgary Herald reporting at least 2 dead and that STARS has been dispatched.

Also reporting the incident started at home, ended at school

Tragic.

My son (12) had to do a lockdown drill at school this week. What kind of world is this?

My daughter is in Grade 4 and doesn't know school without monthly lock down drills. It's as frequent as fire drills in her school.

I can't fathom it as I graduated 15 years ago and Grade 10 was Columbine and we still didn't have lockdown drills or anything more then "If someone is shooting up the school, get the heck out of it". Crazy how it's changed so much.

Sadly, experience has taught First Responders and schools much about this sort of thing, and how to deal with it. =/

I had to do lock down drills back when I was in elementary 16+ years ago. They've been around forever.

My parents had to do the old run home or duck-and-cover incoming nuke drills when they were kids. We just modernized them, that's all.

I remember the days when Calgary still had air raid sirens around the city. One used to be down the street form us at the Willow Park Elementary School.

I used to deliver propane to La Loche - not a very happy little town.

You don't know how many shooters there are or where they are.

Things are getting crazier all the time. My son's school went on lockdown a couple weeks ago when two guys with guns were spotted in the forest behind the school. Completely nerve wracking to watch the police speed down the street outside of your house with their sirens blazing as they drive to your child's school. I pretty much had a three hour long anxiety attack until it was resolved, though no one was caught. Now my wife won't let him walk to school because she's still so upset about it.
